What other solution is there? My dad is nearly 70 too and diabetic before anyone thinks I'm being harsh or selfish. He'd have to isolate too.

What we did in May didn't work. All its done is put 3 to 4 million jobs at risk and redundancies are ramping up at a rate this country has never seen before.

The impact this will do to our country is going to far worse than the actual virus itself. I don't think people have fully appreciated this yet. We are heading for a very very bleak decade maybe even more. And we have not even considered Brexit yet either. Another potentially catastrophic crisis coming our way.

Personally I would of shut Liverpool down, they play the victim so well might as well give them something to complain about, they had their chance, took the Mick as usual and have blown it.

On another note the WHO has come out criticising those who dare speak of heard immunity, pretty much confirmation that that’s the right path then if the WHO thinks it’s wrong.

I do worry going into the new year the impact the virus has had will be felt for many years to come. But I think the ones most to think about are the millions who are going into the festive season with their job hanging by a thread constantly worrying about wether they will lose their job. I honestly believe that’s not the right way of living we should be offering and finding a solution to job security instead of doing knee jerk reactions and hoping for the best. All these tier systems are just like local lockdowns and before today how many towns actually came out of local lockdown? Im pretty sure only 6 towns ended up out of local lockdown in the end so obviously that option wasn’t working so all they have done is give it a new name and some more restrictions and said that will do.
 
Today's announcement is pretty useless and will change very little. I suspect what they are actually going for is hoping the all of the data along with the rhetoric from public health experts will create a fairly significant voluntary behavioral change in the population that will in turn slow the rate of infection down.

Regarding the economy, restrictions of course have a huge negative impact on the economy and jobs. But so does prevalence of the virus. The higher infection rates are then the more people who are going to be afraid of going out and spending money in places they usually go to. That is a simple fact, I have spent way less this year than usual due to how living my life has changed, even since restrictions were lifted. The economy takes a huge hit either way.
 
Easy for the pubs to contravene the rules. Just sell pie and chips or whatever and then let people keep the food on their table all day. Then proceed to stay and drink as much as you like. In the unlikely event of a spot check the police will find you with a 'meal' and a drink. Obviously the proprieters will be really smug about this genius idea that has helped them get one over on the government.

I can't speak for everyone, but Jess and I are already getting shopping slot priority with home delivery as we are classed as vulnerable



This is the answer, every one needs to regularly wash hands, wear mask and keep space. If every one follows these rules without skipping out on them, then there should be no need for any lock down. Everyone should be doing their bit.

The problem is the rebellion of people that don't want to follow the rules, this also includes government members who have flouted the rules and the party leaders failing to sack them.

We also have conspiracy theorist claiming that Covid-19 is a hoax and is nothing to worry about, plenty of fake news and misinformation floating around the internet.

Totally agree, but you can see it happening, persecuting the sick and vulneralbe seems to popular with a certain voter, like when the welfare reforms were spun a shirkers v strivers thing, the opinion polls showed a boost.

So sad, and i say that as another person in the "vulnerable" category who only started going out fairly recently.

My gut feeling is that we're pretty much back in a one foot in one foot out half lockdown situation again that achieves very little apart from ruining businesses and destroying jobs in certain areas. My opinion is it was always a complete lockdown (a proper one) until it was eradicated including no travel in/out of the country until the world pandemic is over, or you pretty much let people carry on with life but advise people to take their own personal precautions but beef up the NHS significantly and then so be it with the consequences. We're just in halfway house nothingness again now. Wake me up when a leader with some balls actually makes a big worthwhile decision.

This is one of the best posts I have ever read on here.

There has been discussion of a second "circuit breaker" lockdown. That would achieve absolutely nothing. If there is a lockdown it has to be until the virus is *gone* (China, New Zealand) else it will merely delay the inevitable.

Similarly, current restrictions are significantly curtailing freedoms whilst not proving effective in controlling the virus. If anything, they are simply making it a slower process to achieve herd immunity, destroying businesses in the meantime.

You simply can't compromise on decisions such as these.
 
Some absolute total numpty has suggested that the rule of 6 is too many and should be reduced to 2. If they dare do that then all hell would break loose :tearsofjoy:

To be honest something like that isn't a stupid idea. Can see one friend down the pub, but can't have a full "night out with the lads".

Who, exactly? And anyway, in tiers 2 and 3 it's effectively the rule of 1 (household/bubble) for indoors and indoors/outdoors socialising respectively.

Best answer to job security etc is guaranteed basic income, so even if you lose your job you know the government has a back-up plan for you. But there is no chance of our tory governments wanting to go down that sort of route because of the "benefit scroungers" belief that people won't want to work.
 
Of the 1000+ mistakes the government has made....allowing Universities to go back a few weeks ago is right up there.

It seems to be where the major spreading has been over the last month. No wonder it's bad in North West currently where I live because we've got a huge University population spread all over the place here.
