Also, I have seen videos from Liverpool last night as huge crowds gathering after pubs closed for the last time last night until whenever (except for Wetherspoons). Also shows police cars being attacked, and people suggesting it is only a matter of time before the city erupts into riots. This follows from what a work friend who lives in Liverpool said at the end of last week when rumours about this lockdown first surfaced (Ie Government leaking it to the press). He is 10 years older than me, and remember well the Toxteth Riots, and remembers the atmosphere leading up to when it all kicked off, he said the atmosphere there at this present time is pretty much as it was then. People are very very angry about what the Government is doing to the city (again) and they are prepared to let their anger be felt. It's just a matter of when, not if.

Well that says a lot about the people of Liverpool when critical care beds are at 90% capacity in the city (not all Covid patients, but critical care beds are needed for all sorts of things). Nice to know they like to look out for each other!
 
Not saying that Liverpool isn't full of selfish idiots as much as any other city, but it's worth remembering that in the eighties, Margaret Thatcher proposed 'managed decline' of the entire region, which technically amounted to, "Let it rot". The feeling against the Tory government there is very strong, and the fact that Liverpool is being entirely shuttered economically while London and the South-East apparently just roll on seems like a political decision. Which, in my opinion, it probably in part is.

Which is why people are not too happy. They have every right to be. There are selfish idiots of course, sadly in life, but branding everyone in Liverpool as such without understanding the not so distant history is quite poor and seems more an attempt a virtue signalling to prove a point rather than grasping the actual reality of the hardship thousands of people suddenly find themselves in.
Regardless what may be seen printed in the press or on the news about how there will be support, what is happening on the ground is very different. There is very little support in reality, and many people were effectively put out of work last night, though supposed to be temporary and should get paid at least some of their wages, in reality some have been informed the jobs may not be there if this continues beyond a few weeks. Putting people out of work, regardless of their skill set seems a very disproportionate way to tackle things.
 
Well it seems like bojo didn’t want to listen to welsh government so we are now one step towards lockdown. From what’s been said the way they are stopping people from travelling from tier 2&3 areas is by anyone who’s number plate is registered in those areas will be fined.
 
I'm not saying that everyone in Liverpool is a selfish idiot (and I know it probably came across that way, so apologies), however I do not get the whole last night of freedom let's go out with total disregard for everything whilst our hospitals are filling up with Covid patients. With the critical care beds in the city at 90% capacity already then there really is not much room for things to get a lot worse, unless you stop giving treatment for non-Covid health conditions to free up space.

I was not aware of the history with the government and Liverpool in the 80s (I was not alive, and it is just not something I have ever come across). I get there is resentment, but surely the people must understand that restrictions in the city will only be lifted if things get significantly better, not worse.

I've also seen plenty of suggestions on social media that the government are deliberately inflating case numbers in the north and deflating them in the south. And that it is impossible that somewhere like Liverpool can possibly have more cases than London. Seriously?
 
It goes back to what I mentioned before. Increasingly it seems people are fatigued and not taking the restrictions and guidelines seriously any more.

I believe that footage from Liverpool could equally come from anywhere else in the country.

Yes because everyone has a car registered to their home address? It won’t work over 50% of the vehicles in this country are not registered to the person driving that vehicle.
Mine is registered to a lease company in Glasgow and has a Scottish number plate, yet I live on the Staffordshire / Derbyshire border with one of the lowest rates of virus in the country.

There’s plenty of photos and video of the same scenes in London , spread across all of their club / pub areas, where there are multiple hotspots for evening venues. Liverpool only had that happen in concert square . But of course , the media that is largely owned by Tory chums is pointing the finger of blame at Liverpool as usual .

Regarding the Tier 3 , yes the hospitals here are nearly full . But that’s because the conservative government forced one of the main hospitals to severely down size as a new one was “ready to open in a few months” . 3 years later it’s still sitting there half built as the conservative government pulled all funding to finish it .

Liverpool and the north is absolutely being led to a managed decline

I thought it was because Carillion, one of the contractors, went bust in 2018? Though to be fair, it's probably a combination of the two, and more factors as well.

That’s true , but it was a government project that they chose not to complete - other projects in the south that were under Carillion received subsequent funding from central government . If I remember rightly the contract was awarded to Carillion despite them being in real financial trouble at the time

Can I just remind everyone digging on Liverpool that the City has one of the biggest student populations in the country so there's a very good chance there were kids from every corner of the country in those videos. It's not a North thing. I have seen plenty of videos of Camden too over the last few weekends. It looked no better. Crowds all gathered together. There was even a drunken impromptu cricket game down south outside bars n restaurants recently wasn't there?

I also don't believe Liverpool n Manchester are any more unsafe than London. Don't believe a word this government says. London has 11m people in the Borough and hasnt applied social distancing any better than anywhere else.

The only potencial plus for London is how transport enforcement works, tfl has some features that some other cities don't.
 
As someone who lives in London and commutes into the centre every day, I have to say social distancing and mask uptake has been generally very well respected. I can't really speak for pubs as I've only been in 1 over the last few weeks (and that didn't seem to have any breaches of restrictions), but on the tube network and in shops people have been doing well at distancing where practicable. The most worrying aspect that I've seen is the new 10pm rush hour, where public transport does appear to get rather busy, especially at weekends, but even then you can tell people are trying their best to distance.

Yep and the pubs/bars I have been into in central London seemed to be taking it pretty seriously with assigned tables. One bar it was about a 20ft walk from the door to the table and they wouldn't let me in until I had a mask on, even though I would remove it once seated to drink.
