I think this is ridiculous, how did the government not notice there stock was getting low? If they did why didn't they put a few weeks of temporary restrictions on who can have them in place until they'd got enough tests? It's just so frustrating.
It seems stock isn’t actually low, tests are available to order today. The issue was Royal Mail (and potentially other staff) capacity to collect them from the distribution centre and deliver them.

That being true I take back my comment about stock but I still think there's a level of incompetence from the government here. They should be in constant talk with the delivery companies to know what capacity they have so they can adjust for it and possibly bring in other companies to help with the deliveries.

The incompetance was Boris making a Sunday night announcement without checking with the NHS that they could actually fulfil the testing and vaccinations he promised.
Capacity for both was fine before he made the announcement and people panic-ordered tests. If Boris had told test & trace was was coming, they would have told him to hold off on the announcement until they can scale up delivery of the test kits.

It seems there are none available again right now, but I hope they are working out a way to deliver them quicker. But all the blame for the fiasco rests with the government announcments not the NHS.

I had a family member in a flap yesterday about that.
I told them the message should of read " we have reached capacity for issuing tests for today. Please try again tomorrow"

Low and behold i got a phone call today say they got the test ordered.

Personally and this is based on no actual scientific fact, just what I've seen happen in the history books.

This almost seems like the start of the end of COVID. History has shown time and time again, as we get the upper hand in pandemics, they get massively more transmissible to attempt to survive as their potency is reduced.

I predict, in 12 months. Covid will almost and finally be a thing of the past. Could be sooner we will see. But I think and most importantly hope, this is the start of the end.

But your forgetting one thing, this virus was made in a lab.

After managing to avoid it since April 2020, we’ve finally had another probable brush with COVID.

My sister came home from university today feeling unwell and exhibiting COVID-style symptoms (achy, temperature, generally virus-like symptoms). Her boyfriend has also been feeling similarly unwell (but produced a negative lateral flow test) and someone she was at a party with on Tuesday tested positive (unsure if they used lateral flow or PCR). She took a lateral flow test this evening, and it almost instantaneously went positive; no lag period here! As such, her and my dad have now both got PCR tests booked for tomorrow.

So it looks as though we may be self-isolating for the 3rd time during the pandemic if she gets a positive PCR (we self-isolated twice way back during lockdown 1; first time was a false alarm before we even went into lockdown, second time was when my mum actually tested positive at around Easter time); I guess we did pretty well to avoid it for a year and 8 months after our first encounter, what with some of the rough COVID periods we’ve had like last winter.

Ah well; what can you do, I guess?

If she does test positive, I’m intrigued to see whether I get it (very likely), as well as whether I show symptoms (less likely; I was asymptomatic during our first COVID encounter in April 2020, and I’m now triple vaccinated. I should also note that I got a lot closer to my mum the first time than I’ve gotten to my sister today) and whether anyone else in our household shows symptoms (my sister is the only one of us who isn’t triple vaccinated, for what it’s worth).

Ah no, sorry to hear that Matt. If the PCRs come back positive you'll all be self-isolating through Christmas. :(

Out of interest, was this ever confirmed?

I thought the current line was still that it leaked out of a wet market? Or if not that, that its source was unknown?

Even if it did leak out of a lab, I highly doubt that it was some lethal weapon made by China to get more severe and kill us all or something. The gist I got was that if it leaked out of a lab, it was more a virus they were experimenting on as opposed to something intended to be some lethal weapon like some conspiracy theories are suggesting.

I’m not doubting you by any means, and I could be completely wrong; I just don’t remember them ever confirming anything different from the wet market narrative.

Sorry to hear that @Matt N if you need any support my DM's are always open.
Sorry to double post, but; thanks both. I do appreciate the support.

I’m absolutely fine at the moment. I’ll admit that as a pretty COVID-conscious person, it has spooked me a bit, but I haven’t been especially close to my sister since she’s been home (the closest I’ve been to her for any sustained period was being sat at the opposite side of our dinner table to her at teatime), and my previous brush with COVID (in April 2020, prior to my 3 doses of Pfizer vaccine, I was completely asymptomatic when my mum tested positive and my dad and sister came down with symptoms) would suggest that I’m at very low risk.

I’ll admit the whole thing is making me a little anxious, though… I feel bad, as I know this makes me a really selfish person, but I’ve always been somewhat COVID-fearing since the very start of the pandemic.

No it wasn't. It's never been proven. Some people have their own theories but there's other theories that are just as plausible.

It of course was never confirmed but the fact all of the papers were burned and the scientists amazingly disappeared plus the fact it just happened to start in a city with a massive virology lab all point in one direction.
Sometimes if you put two and two together you get 4 but I’ll put it out there it’s just my theory just to make it clear.

There is no evidence the virus was “created” in a lab, and it certainly hasn’t got any unusual capabilities compared to other coronavirus’s that would point to human tinkering.

Now it could have been isolated from the wild and been studied in a lab and then got out (and therefore getting a virus out into the middle of a city rather than slow burning out of the wild), I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case at all.

I think that’s most likely. Of course, we’re unlikely to ever get the full truth because…y’know, the CCP.

I put money on it being created in a lab. Let’s see how best to collapse the west but cause chaos. Then get the Russian military set to invade Ukraine and the Chinese set to invade Taiwan at the same time next year. Meanwhile the west strolled with crippling debt and Covid. Sounds like a pretext to a massive global war to me and if Covid was natural I’ll eat my hat!

You wouldn’t do that with a live virus, you can’t control it. Plus covid hasn’t impacted western military but did destabilised Russia’s preferred government in the whitehouse, and covid has massively hurt Russia and China’s economy.

If they wanted to destabilise the west in that way they will attack our technology infrastructure.

They might attack Taiwan and Ukraine at the same time but they didn’t need a pandemic to instigate that.

Falling rapidly into a hole of anxiety and depression here. Possibly exacerbated by some serious lethargy, aching and chills… had thought I’d escaped side effects from my Moderna booster yesterday, but apparently not… (NB get vaccinated kids, a day of blegh is well worth the protection).

But… yeh. The news. Omicron is rife, London now declaring a major incident, and the infection levels through the roof. But is this actually reflected in a major increase in hospital admissions? Or worse, deaths? It doesn’t seem to be, with the exception of incredibly misleading ‘incidental admissions’ (eg admitted with a broken leg, but happens to test positive for covid, therefore bam you’re an incidental covid admission).

At what point are we going to accept that huge numbers are going to catch and transmit each subsequent varient, but it’s not necessarily going to be reflected in higher mortality, or hospital admissions?

I’d very much like to continue living without constant pressures on my mental health now…
