Disneyland Paris: General Discussion

TPWW casually mentioned that big Thunder Mountain was closing for refurbishment.

The website only goes up to February but it has the ride listed as closed for both January and Feb.

Anyone know any more about this? I'm pretty disappointed if it will be closed as i think this would have been one of my sons favourite rides. Of course he won't know what he's missing and it's not confirmed as closed in March so i'm not jumping on the abort button just yet but at this rate we're going to end up spending most of the time in the Studio Park which considering it is a building site is starting to make the whole trip feel a bit silly.

Star Tours is also closed for Feb, argh.
Yeah it's closing for a refurbishment from January 6th I'm afraid.

That's a real bummer. Guess i'll wait till the end of this month when they announce the March closures to make a decision. As it stands we'd still have:

- Space Mountain
- Pirates
- Phantom Manor
- Buzz Lightyear
- Avengers
- Tower of Terror
- Spiderman
- Ratatouille
- Crush Coaster

A decent haul and he likes repeat rides. The bolded are the ones i'm guessing will be the favourites so looks like we'll be in the Disney Construction Land mostly 😂

This is an interesting list (in terms of favourites) - IMHO, Pirates, and maybe Phantom and Rat should be emboldened, and Spiderman and Crushes definitely shouldn't!

We haven't been on any of them (well i've been on Pirates and Phantom but it was 25 years ago), they're based on what i predict my son will enjoy the most. He loves screen based dark rides, hence Spiderman and then he loves coasters with dark ride elements thus Crush. The fact he enjoyed Ice Mountain at Winter Wonderland today only reaffirms my suspicion he will be a big Crush fan!

He used to love dark rides and i've wanted to take him to Disney for years but it wasn't possible. He's started to grow out of them now so i think Pirates and Phantom (and basically anything Fantasyland) probably won't float his boat anymore but he doesn't mind The Curse so worth a go.

The thing to remember here is that yes it’s 9 years since its last big refurb, but it’s actually a really old ride that runs long days often 12-15h’s nearly 365 days a year…. It runs 5 trains, 4? Lift hills 2 stations and 3 switch tracks , that’s a lot of sensors and moving parts and it has most definitely been struggling operationally in the past year and needs some TLC and it is actually a bummer when it’s closed as DLP has a very poor and very old coaster line up ! Yet there is no plans at present to actually build any new ones at present ?

Interestingly i'm watching TPWW Christmas vlogs and they said Avengers Assemble is running really smooth now (much smoother than Space Mountain) and they've added new lighting effects.

There's some ideas in development, especially in regards to Disneyland Park but nothing concrete yet

While Disneyland Paris debuted the show for the public last night I can't help but think when it says "you can't always see magic, it's sometimes a feeling"... That to be... 'We cheaped out on the fireworks so you need to pretend in the blank spaces.'

Although the main street projection, lighting, smoke upgrades, and I think more powerful fountains were a huge bonus, we lost the speckled lights around the hub and the inbuilt fiberoptics in the turrets I think.

The lack of story compared to dreams shows and the IP choices are obvious with Moana 2, Stitch 2, toy story 5 and the new lion king land. I can't help but think it's going to date fast and it's all to 'on trend'.

The drones were good but lacking in some ways and the whole show had massive blank gaps.

It's obvious they can't deploy fireworks all the time with drones but I can't help but feel this is worse than Disney illuminations. I much preferred drones separately.

What's your thoughts? Ives decided not to visit in 2025 because of this and nothing new again.

Are ride closures typically accurate to when they are advertised to reopen?

As well as Big Thunder Mountain being closed Crush's Coaster is also listed as closed but only till March 22nd and we visit March 30th...

Long terms closures, like BTM quite often get delayed.

But specifically dated closures for routine maintenance are usually pretty reliable for reopening when stated.

It all depends on if it’s just annual maintenance or a complete ride repaint. I been to WDW and Dinosaur was supposed to reopen the 2nd week we were there but was delayed by another 2 weeks.

Thanks both. Crush seems to be routine maintenance as far as i can tell as it's only closed for 2 weeks in the middle of March.

Yearly maintenance can also bring to light bigger issues so don't count on it being open. Take phantom and small world they found aspestos so it severely delayed reopening.
With a coaster this old they may x-ray the track and find fractures for example that require substantial re-tracking. Remember these are 365 parks and that coasters been running almost daily for 30+ years! It's a massive issue with DLP all the coasters are getting on and look to be of a similar age.

Crush's Coaster is the newest coaster in the park (2007) so hopefully it'll be ok on that front!

RC Racer is the newest coaster at the resort, yet It’s crazy to think it will turn 15 years old later this year.

Crush will turn 18 and Hyperspace will turn 30. Which remarkably is the main park’s youngest coaster. With the others turning 31,32 and 33.

Besides RC and perhaps Avengers Flight Force, (which is a retheme to a now 23 year old ride), all the coasters at the Paris parks are now old rides.

That being said, besides Disney’s two newest resorts and Orlando, the others including haven’t received new coasters for a similar if not longer duration either. But then again Anaheim and Tokyo have received equally impressive new things instead.

Paris at this exact point of time probably doesn’t need a new coaster, but what it does require Is for some of the existing ones receiving substantial refurbishments. Starting with Big Thunder and ideally Space Mountain afterwards.
