Football Discussion

Oh yeah. I did something crazy with my FPL team and ruined my season (whilst first). So then purposely sabotaged it by putting in the worst possible players, so will be dropping like a rock from now on. Don't ask...o_O

Sorry for the double post.

Was having a think this week. For me football has become over saturated. Far too many pundits (I'm looking at you talk sport) that seems to talk about the narrative rather than the game itself. Too many ego's that seem to have a chip on the shoulder because their careers didn't pan out the way they thought they would and can't handle players now having more success.

Then we have far too many games on Tele, whilst at the same time. Not having the same access foreign countries have to 3pm's. Money is spilling out all over (or so they want us to believe) whilst the lower leagues struggling to make ends meet.

FFP rules laughed at by billionaires and oil backed countries. With citeh supporters chanting a lawyers name for getting them out of financial doping.

For years I had a tube in my head. No idea where this tune came from. I thought, I'd made it up myself. Then the other day whilst browsing the YouTube the below anthem came on. This was the sound of my Saturday mornings. I was just too young to appreciate saint and greavisie. For a while, this was the only access I had to live TV on the Tele.

It was a programme designed to keep the British public up to date on gazza in Italy. He even hosted for a bit, he was replaced by the brilliant James Richardson. Oh how a miss a guy, in an Italian bar holding up various Italian newspapers and telling us the story, all while watching his coffee, cakes and gelatos on the table slowing disappearing every time it came back to him.

Football at its finest. Forza Genoa.

Loved Gazzetta Football Italia, and of course Football Italia itself. Those Saturday mornings full of news, highlights, and funny bits.

Plus it never felt like it was talking down to the audience, when Sky did Spanish football it was the same, and the European Football Show on BT. Still get that with the European Goals Show during the champions league group stages.

Yet for Premier League you get the feeling they think the audience are stupid, not to mention the continual strive for banter and trying to create memes and viral moments.
Any other sport they present it like the audience are adults, but not top flight football.

Or the endless "refs are bent to the top six" bullshit.

Funny how the same var nonsense happens when clubs aren't playing the top six.

If forest go down, you can only blame their tactical naivety. Nothing to do with a dropped ball 2 mins before a goal is scored.

Couldn't agree more, been saying this for years. Although maybe getting bored of football is part of getting older as well as the over saturation.

MNF starts at 6.30pm with an 8pm KO. You'd have to be a complete lunatic to sit and watch all of that rubbish. Even MOTD the 5 minutes of analysis after the highlights is unbearably dull.

The arrogance of ex English footballers is astounding and it's no wonder they always fail in modern day management. Dinosaurs indeed.

@John_P yes, the European Goals Show is superb. A breath of fresh air. The Totally Football Show Euro edition podcast is good too.

8pm kick offs are stupid anyway, who wants to leave the stadium after 10pm and arrive home at 4am, especially if the next day is a work/school day? (Newcastle fans had to do this last week for their trip to Chelsea)

The lack of consideration for the those attending the games is appalling. Why put Newcastle in London on a Monday night? No consideration. I remember lineker once tweeting an LFC supporter who complained Liverpool were in Exeter on a Friday night. He admitted he it Never occured to him that a football fan needs to book time off work. Use a coach because the trains stop before the game finishes and has a 12+ hour day at enormous expense, price of hotels in the area when games are on. that's before we even mention the ticket price. The ticket paying pundit is being screwed by the TV.

You can see why the rise in fan media has grown so much. The fanzine has been replaced by the podcast. Firms like the anfield wrap give a far better analysis on football as a whole then any of the big media giants are doing and it cuts out the fake "banter" that's killing the sport.

Anyway, I'm off to watch a load of goals being scored whilst listening to the lightning seeds

The other week I went to Liverpool vs Luton which kicked off at 7.30pm, even though it's 30 minutes it makes getting home so much easier.

Even the League Cup Final they wanted it to kick off at 4.30pm, and the police said 3pm. Because of the earlier kick off time we were able to use public transport to get too and from Liverpool that day. If it was a 4.30pm kick off wouldn't be a chance you could risk trying to get back to Euston for the last trains home.

Anyhow, absolutely fantastic FA Cup game then. A well deserved win for Coventry.

Back in the day, all evening kick offs were 7:30. And that was when half time was 10 mins and not much injury time either.

Games are taking about 10-15minutes longer than they did 40 years ago. Saturday results used to start coming in at about 4:40. Now it's at least 4:50 and beyond.

8pm seems very late for games on a school night.

Most of the 8pm evening games used to solely be London clubs.

Now though fixture times are chosen based on fans in far off countries over those actually there.

Weren't there also dedicated football specials on the trains? That would help no end for many fans. But that is probably hard to implement in our ancient rail network.

We moan, you think about champions league games. All kick off at 8. Most of Europe is ahead of us, imagine how inconvenient that is to them.

Special recognition has to go out to supporters in other parts of the world. Watching games in middle of the night.

FootExs still run for finals etc, LSL and WCRC would be able to put them on and have the trains and staff to do so, but the appetite from clubs isn't there?

Morocco are playing Angola on Friday night at 23:00 local time!
Edit: Just remembered it's Ramadan so Morocco goes back an hour and it would be impractical to play during sunlight hours.

I've always (possibly wrongly) assumed that across Europe the local transport network doesn't shut down from 11pm. If a game at Anfield kicked off at 9pm I don't think I'd be able to make it back to a bus stop for the last bus of the evening that goes back to by were I live.

Yes , I went to many an away game in the 80s on the inter city owl. It was a dedicated football train with either a bus transfer at the other end or a police escorted walk to the ground.

A bit of a rarity this lunchtime, two simultaneous Match(es) of the Day(s).
FA Cup Chelsea V Leicester on BBC1 or WSL Brighton V Man City on BBC2. Take your pick!

Bloody Wednesday is all I can say. Lost SIX nil against Ipswitch yesterday 🤦‍♂️ 🤬
We must win our next couple of games somehow or it'll almost certainly be relegation for us.
