Football Discussion

I just laugh sometimes. How does it make no sense to support your club and your nation? That is a far fetched claim. Now I'm not the most avid England fan, I've never been to an England match and I do prefer watching my team Leicester. However, that's not to say I don't care about my nation's football team, of course I do. And I want them to do well. How can I support the two teams? I'm from Leicester, hence my support; I live in the country of England, hence my support. Simple.

Blaze, I take it you therefore think that the World Cup is a pointless competition that should be abolished?

And what's wrong with all the flags at England games? I think they look fantastic, especially in away games and in tournaments. They a sign of visible support.

:)

I have to say Blaze, I think you're stark raving mad with that claim/

:D

You call flags with club initials in the corner or with '*town name* *nickname of fans of a team not from said town*', wigs, jester hats, face paint and all that 'fun' and 'an atmosphere'? This isn't the NFL. This is football, and that behaviour is horribly tacky. That sort of stuff is killing football. Every song being to the tune of 'He scores when he wants', the weird obsession with 'false 9s', stats and all that, and the word 'banter'. It's the death of football.

Please tell us, what defines 'fun' and 'atmosphere' when it comes to football, oh wise one?

I don't think the world cup should be abolished, I just don't care for it and love when England don't do well in it. I don't care about international football in general, but I actively hate England for all the reasons I've mentioned. Take one of those flags into The Kop and you'll get you head kicked in. There's nothing worse than them this side of jester hats and half-and-half scarves. Proper flags and original songs are a sign of support.

The sooner Merseyside gets independence the better. If there's some obligation to support England then I can't wait to leave.

This is a flag

These are not

"Look at the awful little town I'm from and the unsuccessful team I support!" How is that clever, interesting or classy? It's tacky, disgusting and unoriginal.

Well guess what Blaze, look at pretty much every sport England compete in, you will see our national flag being displayed by the fans as it is a sign of support for the nation. There are currently people with St George's flags in India supporting our cricket team, people take them to F1 races to support our drivers. Shame on them all.

And now I think back, all those Union Flags seen at the Olympics, they looked awful didn't they.

::)

Blaze, as much as I'll admit to liking that flag, that didn't answer my question. What's your idea of a good football atmosphere? What's your idea of good songs to sing at games? What's wrong with stats? Why do you hate the word banter?

Also, it should say "My bird's got a boss set of jugs" with an apostrophe. Grammar, please. ;)

Why would you take an England flag to your club's match and why would you write your club on an England flag? It makes no sense. If you must support two teams do it separately.

And yes, waving all those flags looks awful. The fact it's the UK flag, a country I despise, makes it even worse. We laugh at jingoistic Americans then when it comes to sports we try and emulate them.

How do you define a good atmosphere? Is there a stat for that now as well? My idea of an atmosphere is one that's loud and passionate that intimidates the opposition and messes with their heads. The sort of atmosphere that made Real Madrid flap at Anfield and get beat 4-1. It can't be 'defined'. Original songs. Not prefab songs where you insert your team's nickname "Oh when the xx go marching in...", not songs about teams you aren't playing "feed the Scousers" or whatever United fans sing these days, not another song to the tune of the terrible "he scores when he wants/you know what you are".

Stats are a plaque. "It's ok that my team played bad and got beat 3-0, we had more possession and our false-9 had a 90% pass success rate for backwards passes with his left foot, so we won really."

We've had this conversation about 'banter' before. It's cringey and not at all funny, and is used to justify being racist/sexist/homophobic/whatever. Just look on Twitter at the sport 'banter' accounts like @BBCSporf and @FootballFunnys and tell me that's good, original, intelligent humour. This wouldn't have happened before Sky.

I suggest you move to another country, sounds like it will suit you better.

The Catalans and Basques have it right with their efforts for independence. Merseyside clearly doesn't belong as part of England.

Yeah, then you can play in your own little league as we may as well kick you out of the EPL if you don't belong in England. A league of Liverpool, Everton, Tranmere, some lower league clubs that may exist there and Sunday league sides. Sorted, enjoy!

:)

Swansea and Cardiff play in England.

We get to play in your league and won't have to be told we have to support the national side. It's win win for all concerned.

Would you have such an issue with the national side if you supported a lower league club that didn't have any players of a high enough calibre to be considered for it?

I still wouldn't support them because the whole thing is so cringey. I can understand why people who support lower league teams not from round here would support England, to make themselves feel better and like they have a chance of seeing their team win something, and they won't have the 'Scouse not English' mentality, but personally I'd still be put off by the flags, the band, the fans, the media, everything that goes with it.

Haha, you put Liverpool bottom of the league #BANTZ #LOLCANO

I don't want my bloody team playing in a two team league with Liverpool, regardless of the fact we'd actually be able win the league for once if that happened. :p

How many derbies have you actually won under Moyes? Although it would be nice for you to win something after nearly 20 years.

What happens if the mersey area were to become independent of the rest of the UK and it organised it's own FA and subsequently it's own "national" team? Such a quandary! :p

We've had more matches in other countries than most international teams. ;)

And if we did, like the Catalans do, I'd want them to do well, but I wouldn't support them and might not want any Liverpool players to play for them and risk injury.

I am missing something here - is there really a significant number of people on Merseyside who want to withdraw from the UK?
