Going against the grain with this one. I think that the effort they've put into The Phalanx over the past few years is commendable. A relatively fleshed out theme, which looks to be cohesive and decently executed.

I don't believe that The Phalanx theme will escape Forbidden Valley, and I would be very pleased if they gave the other areas of Towers a similar theme refresh.

Right track, just fewer shipping containers please. Varney has gone. He's not greenlighting any further projects, you no longer need to appease his weird fetish.

It very likely won't escape Forbidden Valley if its storytelling function is limited to the wider Nemesis universe, like the Ministry of Joy has been limited to X-Sector. If they find a way to transform the Phalanx into an 'Adventure Club of Europe', then there'll be a reason to be concerned. Alton Towers is mostly very fantastical, the rest of the park doesn't scream Sci-Fi and industrial other than X-Sector, so it wouldn't really work anywhere else.

Cohesiveness isn't a bad thing. All I'm hoping for is a storytelling angle that suits the tone of Galactica without falling into industrial drabness. The Phalanx obviously have scientists, so that's a side they can lean on more while creating a lighter/optimistic retheme, it can't be too similar to Nemesis Reborn's more horrifying monster containment feel. Some sort of scientific exploration of John Wardley's proposed oasis could be a nice angle... could be that we're flying through a decontaminated part of Forbidden Valley as Phalanx explorers, or looking for a new home to dunk the Nemesis monster/a new home for humanity because of the Nemesis monster's adverse affect on earth...
I think the phalanx expo could be done in a way where the theme is light they could have discovered the galactica craft and are taking guests out on excertions alternativly they could need to test the craft, so set up an expo to get willing participants guests to test the craft (although that is a bit dark)

I agree, I really like they are making a properly themed coheasive area

Ironically, my thought just before you posted this was that one of the reasons I think there is some trepidation on the topic of a Galactica retheme is that the current MMM team still haven't been given any really creative projects to get they creative teeth into.

I agree that what they've done with Nemesis Reborn and The Curse is commendable, given the budget and brief they've clearly been given to work with. However, they very much fit into a recurring Merlin trope of playing it reasonably safe by sticking to well trodden themes that they clearly feel comfortable with and have a marketing plan for.

It is very difficult to shake the idea that a significant portion of any project budget for 2025 will involve buying large quantities of black paint, and there's your coherency with the rest of Forbidden Valley. I believe they call it.... stylised.

The phalanx expo could be a bit misleading, we don't just have a potential Galactica retheme coming to forbiden valley we also defiantly have project ocean they could literally be showcasing some of the other alien forms of life they house, including some green alien creature, as expos do in the fireworks.

I do wonder that given that Galactica was supposed to have a repaint in 2016 to have dark blue track and black supporters which was cancelled for budget concerns and that it was used to give Nemesis TLC then, wonder if this means that they'll bring back that idea off the shelf and use it for this retheme(?)

The fact that this ride will possibly be finally be fitting into the surrounding area after over 20 years regardless if you like the theme or not is actually a historic moment for Forbidden Valley which is sounds insane.

Just give us a calm or not evil theme and all is good. As I write this, I'm listening to the song Busted and Blue by Gorillaz which IMO sums up Galactica/Air in it's current state.

Even if it's done lazily, it would be nice to finally see a fully themed, coherent area for the first time in ages. Hopefully it's something they can aim for in future projects.

I've never liked Merlin's approach to having one new-themed ride that clashes with everything around it.

I would be happy to see a re-themed Galactica. Air/Galactica has been a sore thumb in the area since it first opened in 2002, so it would be excellent to finally see a cohesively-themed Forbidden Valley.

Yeah, I do wonder if with Varney gone we'll see less shipping containers in future or has it become so physiologically stamped into Merlin by this point?

Speaking of which and a genuine question, when was the last time that Merlin built a new attraction that didn't have any shipping container added to it? (not including rethemed rides like Alton Manor). Was it Smiler maybe?

The Wicker Man doesn't have a shipping container, apart from the pre-fab queue shop, which doesn't look like a shipping container.

No shopping containers for Ghost Train either.

I don’t think Wicker Man had any shipping containers either, if I’m remembering rightly.

Did you expect any less?

Enthusiasts: towers better and theme more cohesively!

Towers: ok.

Enthusiasts: no not like that!

I expected it, doesn't stop disappointment that it's being panned before they've even touched it.

With the rumoured planned closure September to March not happening, could see this one not opening until May. I'd rather they take their time than rush it.

I am curious where this notion has came from as there are only 4 rides I can think of that use containers:
13: The gift and queue shop that is never open
Saw: The shop that is sometimes open
Nemesis reborn: Portable lab theming
Swarm: The store.

Most of these implementations were in early 2010's
