The London 2012 Olympics - The Events

Going by how good the opening ceremony was last night, if all the stuff which was missed out ended up being included, it would've probably been a lot better! :D

Really glad that they cut Oasis out! I absolutely loathe them, they're a swaggering Luddite embarrassment to Britain (can you tell that's my word of the week?). Arctics are a much better British band.

Oasis, and the likes of The Verve, Pulp, Radiohead, Robbie Williams and Spice Girls (yes, even them) would have taken people straight back to London's euphoric years of the late 1990s.

Don't worry, the Spice Girls are rumoured to be making an appearance at the Closing Ceremony. :)

After looking into it from organisers/producers on the internet, there was going to be a section celebrating British television which was cut out to Danny Boyle's dismay due to timing issues. Apparantly the section was going to include the theme tunes of Doctor Who and Coronation Street, along with a visual representation of Monty Python.

Seriously? Oh my, though it's strange how they were going to use Corrie rather than 'Enders. Doctor Who and Monty Python would've been perfect choices for that section too, so much to play with!

It's a shame that fate was also on our side that night when Oasis were thankfully cut! I really hope the Spice Girls make an appearance too to make up for their lack of appearance during the 90s section however.

Meanwhile, a question to ask: Was Noel Fielding featured as the Child Catcher in the GOSH section?

I was very surprised that Wallace and Gromit wasn't included!
It seems to have been forgotten...

There were many things that were excluded, but the majority was covered, and it was covered very well!

Some things were excluded becauss of running times, timing issues, aesthetics, and permssion.

Slightly off-topic here, but Wallace and Gromit are due to be having their very own Prom tomorrow night at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the BBC Proms.

I do hope that they make an appearance at the closing ceremony, though. :)

So many Oasis haters! :(

Whatever you thought of their attitude, the Morning Glory album opitimized the 1990's in so many ways. I mean, who didn't want to hear the strumming guitar intro to Wonderwall played out across the stadium!?

Not surprising though, everything from the 90s seems to be snubbed these days.

:)

I wouldn't say the 1990s are greatly snubbed in terms of music and film, fashion and our generation (;)) definitely, the era like many others before it had incredible events happen that indeed shape us today as a country. Still a shame it got cut from the performance.

I do think that people geerally regard the decade as a bit of an embarrassment these days, but consider the 80s to be the 'classic' decade of flamboyant ideas and fashion (although I don't think as much as people would like to believe). I mean, how many 90s themed parties do you see advertised? Not many. (not that I'd go to one anyway!)

I'll cut it there, as it's getting a bit off topic.

:)

So, Men's gymnastics then. Rather..uh...exciting :p

I remember watching the 2008 games and pretty much falling in love with one of the Japanese gymnasts. I thought he was the most beautiful guy I'd seen in my life at that point... it set me on the road to becoming a bit of a rice queen anyway!

Kōhei Uchimura...

Yeah still beautiful... wait, he's a sportsman as well? :p

So happy Oasis were cut and Britpop barely got a mention! :D

But it also meant Radiohead, Muse and some other good stuff which was in that section of the show was cut.

So we can add Oasis fans to the list of people annoyed by the ceremony? It just keeps getting better and better. :p

I saw the British gymnast on the thing with the handles they spin round on (not my sort of sport if I'm honest, can you tell?), and he was brilliant, so fingers crossed for him.

-1.

That is all. ;)

OK, interesting discussion points, which points of the ceremony (if any) gave you shivers, or even made you start to tear up?

I remember two points: getting shivers all over as the pounding drums heralded the start of the industrial age, and the chimneys started going up. Also got major shivers when they played Pink Floyd's "Eclipse" right at the end, that was the real emotional gut-punch for me!

Good question. Having just watched the first half an hour again I think the point when they stopped for a minute of respect for the wars was quite moving. There was something very eerie about a bustling stadium suddenly coming to a complete stand still.

I didn't especially tear up during the performance but I honestly found the entire 'travelling the Thames' section incredibly wonderful because almost every bit of music I recognised, especially that moment of Pomp and Circumstance by Elgar going through the Underground during the Victorian Era.

Going on from that, the Industrial Revolution was spine tingling as well with the music composition with the drums very overpowering and strong.

Hearing Abide With Me being Sung, But then again Abide with Me always makes me Teary.

Also got some shivers when they were telling the story about the Music industry.

Eclipse (until McCartney ruined it) was amazing, and I liked them using First Steps as the torch arrived, and the Thames bit at the start was cool, but I wouldn't say any of it was 'emotional' apart from maybe Eclipse.

The Industrial Revolution section was masterful - everything from the chimneys rising up unannounced to the rings slowly linking together, was brilliant. The choreography of the Abide with Me section really did strike me as the emotional high point, even if Emile Sande's lack of breath control was grating on me slowly. The symbolism of the dust and coming together against the odds really did strike a chord.

I was quite disappointed with the cultural section involving the mobile phones though - I felt it glanced over a lot of British heritage for the sake of perfecting a flash mob.

I already posted to you on Facebook the awesome bit of music used during the opening montage up the river, but I'll post it here for everyone else's benefit! A favourite band of mine for a while, it's awesome to see them break out of obscurity like this.

The band name has a naughty word in it, so I'm afraid I can only link you to the song like this. Listen though, it's great and will remind you of the ceremony! :)
