The London 2012 Olympics - The Events

After looking at your question again Sam, i've Just played the spectacle again on BBC iPlayer. There is one moment where I actually had to hold back a weird, sudden sense of emotion. I've honestly no idea what triggered it off, but this Industrial section leading up to the rings is most definitely the highlight for me.

Does anybody know the track used at 1 hour 10 minutes roughly 10 seconds onwards? :)

That'd be I Heard Wonders by David Holmes (Through the wonder of Shazam and Sir Tim Berners-Lee ;) )

I think we can all agree that the parallel universe's opening ceremony with a Freddie Mercury fronted Queen ending the show had the edge over "ours"

OK, great, but he died of AIDS over two decades ago, so I don't see the relevancy? I would have liked to have seen John Lennon, Miles Davis, Michael Jackson and Sergei Rachmaninoff having a jam at the end, but that's never going to happen either.

Amusing story...

Olympic gatecrasher: India hunts woman in red

The woman, wearing blue trousers and a red top, walked next to India's flag-bearer, wrestler Sushil Kumar.

She stood out in contrast to athletes in yellow saris or blue blazers.

India, already unhappy with its truncated TV coverage during the opening ceremony, is seeking an apology from the London organising committee.

"This was bizarre. We will ask for an apology," India's chef de mission, PKM Raja, told the Times of India.

"The Indian contingent was shown for just 10 seconds and to think this lady hogged all the limelight."

"When we entered the stadium, the woman who was walking between us and the contingent ahead of us, the Independent Olympic Athletes, suddenly came back and started walking next to Sushil Kumar, our flag-bearer.

"We are totally surprised by the manner in which she joined the delegation and kept walking inside the stadium," he said.

He told the newspaper that he was not sure of the woman's nationality.

He said the woman "embarrassed us in front of the world".

Several newspapers claim to have identified the woman in question as a post-graduate from Bengaluru, India. However this remains unconfirmed.

India is fielding 81 athletes at the London Games, with medal hopes in archery, boxing, badminton, shooting, tennis and wrestling.

Olympic organisers Locog have said they will release a statement shortly.

The women's road race is keeping me at the edge of my seat! We could win a medal :D

And we have, Lizzie clearly deserved it but looked the most tired of the three. What a cracking finish. Now I'm really hooked! It was a absorbing, enthralling race. Let this be the start of something. She had the stamina but not the speed, she was a inspiring spectacle to watch.
TEAM GB GOT A SIVLER!

As a whole, I quite enjoyed the opening ceremony.

The industrial revolution was, as for many others, the particular highlight. The choice of music and the use of such a vast number of drummers created quite a pulsating atmosphere - I envy those who were fortunate enough to experience it live.

Addlington has just got a broze medal

And rightly so! Watching Team GB just overcome UAE 3-1 it gives me confidence that a point against Uruguay can see us through. Bellamy seems much more relaxed and at home by a team leader and the same goes with Giggs but Bellamy seeming more fluent and is easily the football player of the tournament so far! Sinclair and Allen proved that they are Premier League quality at Swansea. I wouldn't be surprised to see Butland in the Prem come August with some world class saves. Bale and Beckham aren't needed with a fluent side like this. Richards and Tomkins seem a bit rusty from lack of football but Taylor and Ramsey are rising stars. I do hope with Wilshere not returning until Oct for Arsenal that Ramsey will be commanding Arsenal's midfield more. The last 8 beckons for Tpeam GB!

A bit OT from the recent comments but I went down to watch the swimming heats this morning and got a pretty good panorama (as it ended up) of the Olympic site from the Aquatic Centre.

Lovely picture Psychoaster... truly shows what a wonderful Olympic Park that London has built.

Just seen the interview with Lizzie Armitstead, she's so sweet it's unbelievable, she seems overwhelmed bless her! Also, she's the cousin of my best friend. :)

Team GB played pretty well tonight in football beating UAE 3-1.

I also enjoyed watching Tsonga play with his bat and ball in tennis for France.

Incredible to think what it was before that was built - just wasteland. The whole area is completely transformed on an astounding scale.

The crowd at the football annoyed me. In the highlights i saw there was no singing and complete silence until the ball got right down to one end then there was a pathetic bit of noise which might pass for cheering

To be fair... GB have never played before and so we don't have songs, or chants, or known things to shout at them at a football match. Add to that the fact that a lot of the spectators won't be your die hard England fans and for many it might be their first football match!

In other news... ALERT FOR TST TOM DALEY FANS - HE'S GETTING WET ON THE BBC RIGHT NOW

I think it's good, having people being quiet. This is meant to be a test of the athletes concentration and sportsmanship, not a pub singalong. This is the Olympic Games, not the usual beer-soaked blokey affair that football usually is. :)
