The London 2012 Olympics - The Events

I was at Wembley yesterday, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Seeing GB win 3-1 was frankly fantastic - one of the best evenings of my life for a long time. The catering was very slow, however, and we missed the GB kick-off. Yeah, we were on the top tier, but we got a good view of the games. Probably one of the best moments was seeing Suarez getting tackled and Senegal winning 2-0 with a man down. I'll do a more thorough post when I'm back home. :)

Well done to our mens team gymnastics team who have defied the odds to pick up a well deserved silver. Excellent performances under immense pressure in a cauldron of a venue.

Well done guys.

Edit. After an inquiry on the dismount of the final Japanese member (who fell off) we have gone back into bronze. Still an awesome effort.

Swimming barneses are barnes.

Loving the swimming. Some amazingly exciting races!

Absolutely fantastic stuff from the gymnastics team, really was world class stuff. I do feel sorry for the Ukraine team, thinking they had won bronze before the Japan appeal was confirmed.

There were some spectacular dives earlier from GB in the Mens 10m Sync, just a few unfortunate rounds put them out of the medal placings.

Really loved basketball. Gutted our ladies lost to Canada. It was so close!

If it wasn't for that 4th round dive, they'd've been well in the medals, quite possibly knocking on for silver.*

The pressure must've been almost unbearable. Hope it all comes good for the individuals... Synchro seems nigh-on impossible anyway!

* Don't you just love how during the Olympics / Commonwealth Games you become instant experts on sports you've never watched before? :p

Synchronised Diving is an utterly stupid and arbitrary sport anyway. They have no contact, or effect on each other's dive - it's just two people trying to do exactly the same thing right next to each other.

If we have that, why not Synchronised Javelin or Synchronised High Jump? It literally makes as much sense as Synchronised Diving. ::)

I am, at the moment, apparently the expert on every sport in the world in my house at the moment... Apparently watching it while nobody else is in the room means I supposedly know all the rules ;)

Watching the women's volleyball until 12:40 in the morning was something I never thought I'd do. GB won as well, apparently with no funding for 2 years and in their first Olympics as well! Even more strange was the fact that the old BBC F1 commentator Jonathan Legard was commentating - and it was clear that he had absolutely no idea about the sport or its technical terms :p

It is though, isn't it? I mean what do you reckon proper volleyball teams make of it?

:p

Beach Volleyball is a joke event. It's just normal volleyball on a weird playing surface. If you have that, why not Mud Tennis? :p

It's still pretty skillful though - I mean the reaction times you have to have to retrieve a powerful spike and get it back into the air for a counterspike are very quick, it's all about technique and placement.

Well the ball wouldn't deflect off the mud for starters :p

I am bewildered by the inclusion of Basketball, and not internationally recognised (yet British) sports such as Bowls and Cricket though.

^They did use to include cricket in the Olympics. Back in 1900, when the Games were in Paris, cricket was contested between two teams - GB and France. The French side was allegedly made up of British embassy officials. :p

If cricket were to be reintroduced today, then I think that the best way of doing it would be to use the Twenty20 format, and possibly have it as a straight knock-out competition. However, not all countries are renowned for cricketing prowess, and it might be considered pointless to build stadia for cricket where it isn't terribly popular.

Well they are using lords cricket ground. Are you sure they are not doing cricket?

They're using it for archery. As much as I despise cricket, I think it should've been included.

And also, the beach volleyball is ridiculed for the female's skimpy costumes as well as having a strnage choice of surface.
