The London 2012 Olympics - The Events

My dad came up with a very good and simple rule about whether a sport should be in the Olympics or not. It's simply this: if the Olympics isn't the most prestigious and highest honour in that sport, it shouldn't be included.

That would obviously take out soccer (the World Cup) and tennis (Wimbledon) but leave in most of the rest. The Olympics should be about putting the spotlight on sports and athletes that are ignored most of the time! There's enough soccer/tennis/golf/cricket/rugby on television already, there's no need for it if the players don't consider it the top title in the game. :)

I know what you mean, Sam. It takes the shine out of things when these countries only have a quarter of their decent players in events such as soccer etc.

To be fair, in football the Olympics gives the younger players the chance to compete for what is a very prestigious prize - a medal. If there was no U23 restriction then I would agree with you, but many of these players will not get a chance for a good few years at least in a major international competition - this gives them that experience.

As a rower I am very proud to say we have the first GB Gold.

Women's Pair (Sweep-Oar) rowing :D

YES! We've won a Gold Medal! ;D

Congratulations to the two ladies who did it for us in the rowing, You've done Britain proud :)

There's huge controvery in the badminton where 4 pairs, including the 3rd seeds, have just been disqualified after apparently playing to lose in an attempt to get an easier draw in later rounds.

I'm not sure what to make of this really, I can't help but feel the tournament structure is partially to blame - if it was a simple knockout they'd never have got into this mess.

I'm not much of a sports fan at all. In fact it's never appealed to me. But I've really been enjoying watching the swimming and rowing. :D If I'm enjoying sports then you know that it's good!

Great to see we've won a gold medal! :D

And a Bronze in the Men's 8 :D The Bronze race was also very impressive because it was always known the Germans would win but we did draw level with them 3/4 of the way in. It's a shame though that we tried taking Germany because the energy it used to catch up with them probably cost us the Silver as GB were then to tired to sprint the last 500m.

Bronze for Froome and gold for Wiggins in the men's individual time trial. Excellent. :D

Brilliant day all those medals have moved use up the leader border well done GB looking forward to the rest of the Olympics

Just wanted to say well done to Team GB - so glad we finally have some gold medals! :D Hopefully it's going to increase from now on ;)

Nice to see the Medals coming in now, Regardless of what colour they are. Hopefully we can get more Gold :)

In the tennis, Andy Murray is now in with a real shot at the medals after an easy victory over injured Nicolas Almagro of Spain. He will play Tsonga or Djokovic next, where victory would guarantee at least a silver.

Even harder than his Wimbledon run then - Djokovic and probably Federer in the final. Number 1 and 2 in the world. Not sure why people are giving Murray more of a chance here than they normally do in the Grand slams.

Trekked it to Cardiff yesterday to watch Mexico vs Switzerland and GB vs Uruguay. Both good games, the crowd was being very harsh to Suarez. He was shown on the big screen half way through the Uruguayans national anthem and it was drowned in the boos :p

Glad to see we've made it to the knockouts, we should beat Korea who only drew 0-0 to Gabon.

We got GOLD and SILVER in the Canoeing!! ;D

I've been to the venue where they're doing the canoeing, It's really fun! ;D

RE Murray - he's through to the last 4, so he'll win a medal if he wins either of his next 2 matches. I'm not giving him more of a chance at gold than winning Wimbledon, but there's a strong chance of at least a medal. That said, he'll have to get past Djokovic for a shot at gold, which will be a tough task.
