My dad came up with a very good and simple rule about whether a sport should be in the Olympics or not. It's simply this: if the Olympics isn't the most prestigious and highest honour in that sport, it shouldn't be included.
That would obviously take out soccer (the World Cup) and tennis (Wimbledon) but leave in most of the rest. The Olympics should be about putting the spotlight on sports and athletes that are ignored most of the time! There's enough soccer/tennis/golf/cricket/rugby on television already, there's no need for it if the players don't consider it the top title in the game.
