[The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation

Surprised at the few anti-uniform comments. It looks really good, pretty high quality and the staff who wore it today did a really good job at getting into character.

Any themed uniform is better than the generic red uniform that everyone else wears.

The uniform would be perfectly acceptable in CCL, since it looks like something a childrens TV presenter might wear. But it is totally at odds with the sinister theme of X Sector.

Clearly the fairly dull and uninspiring theme of X-Sector has changed then...

The Smiler team are going to be off in their own mini-section of X-Sector, the next few weeks will be the only time that they will be close to the other rides/buildings.

I love how in marketing images coasters are usually highly exaggerated...

...but with The Smiler it just isn't! ;D

All the elements of it are consistent with what we've seen previously though? Even the pinstriped arm and leg warmers...

The whole outfit is exactly what you'd expect from what they've done promotionally so far - even down to the glasses (of which they are selling variants in Towers Trading and will probably sell replicas in Buy The Smiler).

The uniform is dreadful but just remember that most of the time the staff will be hidden away in the station building and judging from previous themed uniforms will only last a season or two anyway.

The uniform is in keeping with the rest of the ride though surely, certainly with respect to colours. Every promotional image since the first teasers have used the three main colours of yellow, black and white.

Sure, its not the most aesthetically pleasing, but they are ride operators not runway models. The park obviously don't want to go down the "mad mental asylum" route with this ride as nothing released about the ride has suggested so if we remove the Sanctuary from the equation, so they were never likely to pick lab coats and stethoscopes.

What I'm taking from all this is that its a bizarre mind washing machine (oh, the secret element pun wrote itself) and that people go a bit, well, wacky and smiley because of it. The uniform certainly fits in if thats the case, as the "brainwashed" become the brainwashers. It's meant to be a virus to fix us all.

Sub-Terra uniform has made it into season 2.... we can but hope they survive.

I still like it, it doesn't look kiddy at all. It looks quirky but has all the visual cues associated with X-Sector too (the cut of the uniform, the boots, the goggles and the cap.

ahh well :)

"Quirky" is not a work I have ever associated with X Sector. It belongs in the family areas of the park (where I would have no problem with it), along with "whimsical", "wacky" and "silly".
X Sector, to me, should be along the lines of "serious", "forboding", "sinister", "ominous" or even "Orwellian".

I honestly think the comparisons to Ronald MacDonald are on purpose. A clown's purpose is to make you smile, although they regularly have a sinister side assigned to them, right? I wouldn't be surprised if Ronald MacDonald was an inspiration.
Think of the Olympics. The staff were called 'Games Makers'. Well think of the staff here as 'Smile Makers'. They're meant to look 'not-serious' on the outside. But, like clowns, they are so unsinister/unserious that they end up sinister. What does this is the inclusion of black and the sharp yellow. If it was from CCL, the colours would be softer and more pastelly. (I do realise I've made up several words but I'm sleepy ;) ).
Of course it's not going to correlate with the Sanctuary. The attractions are linked, but one's style is from the early 20th Century and the other from the early 21st. If the Smiler was going to be a copy of the Sanctuary it wouldn't reflect the progress of the Ministry of Joy.

Great update, however it stirred the same couple of emotions in me that every update since xmas has!

"Wow! That looks awesome"

"Omg... they still have so much track to put up and the lift hills"

"Wow! That looks super awesome!"

"Whoa... the station doesn't even have walls yet? Seriously?!"

It looks great, but I'm a betting man and I wouldn't put a penny on this being open in May.

Does it matter that it's 'consistent' if it looks awful?

The dummies in the Thirteen queue are consistent, but they look a bit crap.

They could have done something much better than the Maccies bloke in dentist shades and have kept it consistent to the theme.

Oh, and those photos are incredible. Really starting to hit home just how bats*** crazy this thing is.

What a great photo update! Thanks!

I have to pinch myself every time I see this coaster... I mean, look at it!

Would you ever imagine 10 years ago that a coaster this complex would one day be built, let alone at the towers.

I'm not really bothered about thematic clashes and if it doesn't or does fit in with its surroundings. As long as it has a committed singular theme, I'm happy :twirly:.

Again, people. Step back, really think about and look at what has been built here.

It's incredible.

I'm sure the staff will be advocates, who have already been through the marmalisation process, have been fixed and are now working fot the MOJ, that way the uniform kinda fits in with them already being happy & smiley :twirly:

Having looked at the pictures I've suddenly had the horrific thought of "oh man, I hope that the trains make it all the way round". I know that it will have been tested but jees, how would you fix an issue like that on a ride like this?!

It's just an absolute beast of a machine. If Nemesis is meant to be along the lines of "a monster unleashed" then what the hell have we created here!

What I said about 2 pages back

Here...

I'm not that bothered about the uniform either way, but I wanted to point something out...

Isn't the uniform meant to signify an advocate? The uniform looks to be the same as the outfits the riders are wearing in the game, which is why I see her as an advocate and what we'd become after riding

Basically, ride ops are advocates who have been marmalised and are loading us onto the ride - brainwashed into running the ride. The real doctors and puppetmasters are elsewhere, out of sight.

EDIT: What I meant was great minds think alike!
