I am hoping the indoor section is as good as Saw: The Ride. There seems to be much more then meets the eye. When Thorpe originally marketed Saw, did they mention any "indoor section"? I swear the only thing they really marketed was that hill, drop and head chopper! Alton Towers up to this point have deliberately avoided anything that happens indoors. Just like Saw you have to ride it yourself.

One thing I know for sure is.... this beats Saw anyday.
Tbh They spent so long marketing Saw as 'the worlds first coaster based off a horror film' that everything else got ignored...

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

Anybody know how long it'll be until testing begins? I mean, do these things usually start the minute that track is in place, or do various electrical things have to be done first?

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

They probably won't be able to start testing the ride until all the electrics to ensure safe operation of the ride have been installed. I don't know for sure how long that'll take, but I'd hope that they've made a start on it already while everything else has been going on.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

The first lift also still needs a chain fitting... Not going to get far without that! ;)

But, they have been fitting the electrics as the go, the sections of track needing wiring, actually come with the cables pre fitted it would seem, plug and play if you will. However, these will all then need connecting to the central computer system and the whole thing will need programming etc. Then there will also need to be final clearance checks just to make sure it doesn't crash into itself ;)

However, I think it should be testing within the space of about 2 weeks? Probably not even that! But, I'm no expert, so don't take my word for it :)

I'd like to think they'd be wiring as they went along, it would make sense :)

I'd hope so, especially given that the project's behind and that they've been doing exterior work on the station for a while.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

I would say the major hardware is pre wired so just needs connecting up. But I don't know if anyone knows if the cars are on park?? But testing should be starting next Wednesday at the latest

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

The cars are on park, as far as I am aware.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

The cars were sighted at the site. The computer may already be pre-programmed.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

Normally ride computers arrive pre-set don't they, and any issues that arise in testing are applied as they come up? The computers normally aren't the sort of computer you may think of, where it runs an application to manage it all. A lot of rides use dedicated hardware which manages them instead.

Judging by what track we saw on the car parks the sensors and hardware are all in place and they just need connecting up. That shouldn't be too hard I hope :)

Just to show how far we have come in 3 weeks:

Shows how fast they have managed to get:

* Second Dive Loop
* Second Air-time hill
* The Giggler Leg
* Transfer Track & Maintenance Track
* Vertical Lift Hill
* Final Turn
* First Inverted Drop
* Second Inverted Drop
* The Hypnotiser Leg
* First Lift Hill

All that done in three weeks - not bad.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

Apparently park staff were today telling people that testing will begin on Saturday. Not that that means anything but...

Oooh, I am on park Saturday...although I doubt it will be ready to start testing that early. Would be a great surprise if it did happen though and if it does, I will of course video it if it does test while I'm there (will be checking back several times during the day). Next visit after Saturday is the 10th May which by then testing should be well in flow.

Oh, I do love a good PLC system. depending on how much wiring they have laid during footer and track construction depends on how quickly the system gets to primary connection tests on the PLC system.

I wonder if they are going for a Siemens series, there was always something about the rail mount system that got me smiling when i worked in production line maintenance.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

LOL, I don't know about that, but it's a pretty safe bet that the proxy sensors will be the same little green boxes that seem to be used on every other ride on Earth. You'd think they could use a coloured plastic that blends in with the track a bit better. :p

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

People are forgetting that the footers aren't concreted in yet. It seems unlikely that we will have cars whiz zing around the track unless the footers are secured.

omg guys

have you actually thought that the worlds first beating element could actually have something to do with the marmaliser and maybe something to do with laughing gas. That is the rumours that are going round my school and alton towers when we went in january. we are going again in june 13th 2013 if anyone wishes to join me :twirly:

Consign AG do a lot of ride systems and programming. But Gerst seem to have an inhouse department for it.

I'm sure there'll be no health and safety issues with gassing park guests... ::)

They will be Pepperl & Fuchs sensors, green is their brand colour.
