have you actually thought that the worlds first beating element could actually have something to do with the marmaliser and maybe something to do with laughing gas. That is the rumours that are going round my school and alton towers when we went in january. we are going again in june 13th 2013 if anyone wishes to join me :twirly:

Seriously? Laughing Gas? No wonder this rumour is being spread by school kids.

Trust me, never in a million years will there be laughing gas on this ride. It would essentially be illegal to force your guests into being intoxicated.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

There is nothing wrong with suggesting random things, it might not be laughing gas they use due to H&S but they could use the smelly gas, to make the rider smell something and think its laughing gas, along with a visual aid of a gas canister with Laughing Gas on the side.

If the Sanctuary is anything to go by, expect the unexpected, and I wonder if there will be a section which drops water on you?

With the random nature of this whole project and how completely messed up The Sanctuary was, I really wouldn't put anything past them to be honest :p

Whilst I'd LOL if they did use it, perhaps some light reading:

Nitrous oxide is a volatile substance which is a gas at room temperature. It belongs to a group of drugs which kills pain.

Nitrous oxide has many legitmate uses but some people misuse it because when inhaled it can make people feel euphoric and relaxed. This happy feeling has led to it being nicknamed ‘laughing gas’. Some people have also experienced hallucinations.

However, like other volatile substances found in glue or aerosols, it can cause death even on first time use. This is due to suffocation from a loss of the oxygen available to you.

Nitrous oxide can sometimes be sold to recreational users in balloons.

There are three main legitimate uses of nitrous oxide:
• To numb pain during medical procedures such as dental work.
• In engines to increase their power output.
• In catering, in some aerosal cans like whipped cream and in food packaging.

Whilst I am sure there are a few that would join in welcoming such an addition to Alton Towers, I believe the chances are rather somewhat remote ;D

Probably the BEST bit of speculation so far though lol!!

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

Realistically how much room have they got to play with in the underground section? Most of the space is taken up by the drop, then there is a relatively short section of straight track before the lift hill. Surely if anything of significance was installed down there we would have seen it. I can't think of anywhere else they could hide a 'secret element'. :/

Personally I am happy with the ride as it is - if anything does go on underground it'll be a nice bonus. :D

how about Helium :twirly:

Potentially bad for you, and because its so much lighter than air it will just rise straight away, having no effect on riders, essentially your paying for a potentially poisonous, invisible stream of expensive gas.

Would be easier to just have air jets / mist and then BS about it, cheaper, more effective and wont potentially poison any paying guests. Lets be honest, mist, air and lighting effects are all what we can actually expect as a physical effect for this ride, how they are used is another thing, but they are the safest things to use on a fast moving rollercoster as well as being the cheapest to run. Which is why just about every other high theme ride in the world uses them.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

The Alton Towers Guide have just posted a video on Facebook showing the testing of the Marmalisers screens which show 'The Disorientator' showing the ride vehicles flip 360o degrees just like a washing machine ;) It looks like The Smiler will feature a washing machine type element or effect to create this sensation! :D

Very interesting! Perhaps spin_doctor was right after all and those eggs won't need to be bought? ;)

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

Rotation and strobes.

Is that not just the barrel roll like in the game? No reason to think its a washing machine element tbh.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

GENIUS! I simply cannot express how insanely awesome that screen looks. So bright and vivid, the motion graphics are of incredible quality.

This just keeps getting better and better...

Number of rotations is an interesting one though, I suppose 'inversion' might confuse a few people. Probably just a change in terminology for an audience that is not comprised of roller coaster nerds. :twirly:

The scanning memories part is creepy as...

Love it <3

Yeah could be.

We haven't physically seen any signs of a washing machine type element on site. Unless they have of course kept it extremely quiet, but I'd be amazed in knowing how they would have done it.

I think it's fair to remain optimistic at this point and not jump to any conclusions.

Oh and if you have a double post, just click 'flag post' and a member of the team will delete it for you when they can. :)

I think it will be an effect to create the washing machine illusion without going upside down. I.e a huge optical illusion which is after all, what the ride is all about. I think it will be a large rotating tunnel (similar to Duel's) with a spiral at the front.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

I thought it had some relevance to a washing machine at first, then it hit me that it's spinning like the logo projected onto the Towers late last season.. I flat out refuse to accept the possibility of such a ridiculous element. :p

But wouldn't strobes limit the riders? (as in no epileptics)

Not really, many attractions feature strobe lighting, Nemesis: SUB-TERRA, Duel, Hex, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, its a regular effect in Theme Parks these days

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

You can get safe strobes these days I think, so they might use those.
