Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

Just a random thought of mine.

We've seen there are trims on each air time hill under the Marmaliser. With the trains moving so quickly through the Marmaliser could these trims perhaps be activated at these points to slightly slow down the trains so guests can fully experience the Marmaliser's physical and visual effects. When I say slow down I don't mean to the point you're at snails pace. But just slow enough to allow guests to experience the effects while also ensuring the ride does not lose any momentum to continue it's track run.

I know nothing of how trims or so on work on these rides so apologies if this comes off as a very dimwitted post if it's impossible. I'm not that educated with roller coasters, I'm more critical with the visual and theatrical stuff. :p

I think that makes perfect sense, in fact it makes a great deal more sense than not doing it. It will make the ride a bit more enjoyable so long as it doesn't affect the pacing too much - it will actually create a wee bit more air too, combined with being subjected to effects and right next to the marm screen - which may well react to the trains also.

You know, this is going to take some doing to get right.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

From the looks of it the train will rocket through there at a fair bit of speed. I'd imagine that by the time the trims had actually had any effect the front rows would already be leaving the area under the legs :p

I'm hoping that they won't be used at all unless the train drastically overspeeds. Given the fact they are using friction trims rather than magnetic I imagine that's all they will do though. If you want to trim some speed of the ride every time in an efficient and comfortable manner magnets seem to be the way to go, ala Th13teen :)

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

I reckon the main purpose of the trims will be to control the duelling effect going into the knot. So if one train is slightly ahead, that will get trimmed and the one behind won't. I think this is also why the second hill is taller than the first, as it will take longer to negotiate the two dive loops than the sea serpent flip.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

I wouldn't expect anything beyond a mister. I was thinking back to The Sanctuary (I only went through at Scarefest so I've no idea if it was the same recently) where the marm room sprayed at you and was all white and weird. Thought perhaps something like that might be incorporated into the indoor part of the ride. and it fits with some of the images on the screen. Although it wouldn't really be a 'first' or 'special' element so maybe not.

*continues pondering*

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

I wonder whether we might get a slight smell of something near 'the giggler' which would be good, though might not be very nice in the queue!

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

The giggler may just be blasts of air to simulate gas coming out. I think the innoculator will spray water onto the riders.

as for the "disorientator" hmmm.... mixed feelings on this. The ride looks enough vomit inducing without any more stuff to disorientate the riders lol! If anything I think its going to be trommel style tunnel with but with some very special effects!

Looks like this marmalisation thing actually works.

:twirly:

It's a shame they didn't get a load of these though ;)

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

Moving away from the Marmaliser discussion...

What criteria warrants H&S to install that horrible 'safety netting' found under both Spinball and Rita? I understand it's to catch falling items from riders. H&S may view the inversion count and airtime as reasons enough to install it.

I hope not. What a way to taint views of this stunning ride.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

All Merlin coasters have netting under them whenever they pass over a path. ::) Other parks don't seem so bothered about this though.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

Ironically, the ride that probably needs it the most (air), has no netting at all!

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

Shh! Don't give them ideas!

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

What other rides have netting? I can only think of RITA! Nemesis and Oblivion don't as far as I can remember.

Has anyone tried scanning the videos of the marmaliser with the app? I thought I saw the little eye icon at the top of the Giggler segment.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

My thoughts on 'The Disorientator'

Just a quick post about the increasing number on the Marmaliser screen...

The screen goes up from 0 to 360 - I'm guessing that is the number it stops at and restarts from 0. The word below it is 'Rotation' (meaning one) not 'Rotations' (meaning multiple rotations). So a 360 rotation (complete circle) is a Barrel roll like we have indoors. Then the word Strobes is on the screen meaning strobe lighting.

So basically, to me it just means strobe lighting while going down the first drop and through the first barrel roll indoors and they have named that section 'The Disorientator'. None of this 'washing machine' element.

I do believe however, there will be a little pre-show on the straight track after the first barrel roll and before the first lift hill.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

Is that Saw the ride, where its showing the riders faces in the video? So that's why they painted it black! ;)

The screens look bloody amazing! Really set the whole thing alive and ties the theme together :)

One worrying thing from the video though is that in over 4 minutes I maybe heard screams from Oblivion 3 times?

Yes, the screens are of great quality - hopefully they have fixed that one screen that wasn't working.

Also it was really quiet on park today that is probably why there was hardly any trains going round on Oblivion as it was apparently a walk on all day so they were probably waiting for people.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

I only have one word for y'all....scarefest!! This thing in the dark with the screens on will be incredible!

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

It's time for another photo update! Great to see the track finally completed. Things are continuing to progress nicely. I hope you enjoy!

WARNING: EXTREMELY PICTURE HEAVY POST!!

What do we have here? Completed track at last:

More dark grey 'plastic' strips have been added to the station building:

Unfortunately the screens then started changing colours but still, a couple of different angles:

Here you can see the foot of The Flasher being built. I believe the foot of The Inoculator is complete but it is not possible to get a view of it:

I think these are pieces that will be used on other feet:

More fencing, possibly for the queue:

Here is an E-stop button on the lead up to the vertical lift:

And what look like they could be speakers on this brake run, there are several of these:
P1150802_zps8f23309c.jpg

The inverted drops, you can't tell from photos but they are slightly different:

Piping that is still to go up:

It's going to be Mr Twirly:
P1150812_zpsd182d8f3.jpg

Finally, although the track is complete I do have a few concerns. Firstly you can see that this support at the top of the first lift does not properly connect to the track:
P1150813_zps3e67a180.jpg

P1150808_zps71dc3e09.jpg

This is the first inverted drop, you can see daylight between where the rails join up. It definitely shouldn't be like this:
P1150787_zpsbb8cba21.jpg

Hopefully Gerstlauer are able to sort these problems before testing begins.

Anyway I hoped you liked the photos! As usual, all photos were taken from areas of the park fully accessible to the public. Please do not replicate my photos without permission. TowersStreet may use them if they wish.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

I've been following this topic for quite a while now but haven't wanted to pass judgement yet, however, I think The Smiler may result in me getting an Annual Pass again. What a phenomenal looking ride, let's hope it is as good as it looks!
