[The Smiler] Marketing discussion

Re: [SW7] Marketing discussion

Indeed it's more to do with the press picking up on it. On the plus side though, we have seen stuff in the north east (the sheep) and posters in Manchester and Leeds too. The real headline grabbing stuff such as the projections is bound to be in London, but nice to see other stuff spread out around the country too.

In regards to viral marketing, I doubt this is the last of it. The initial "teasing" with the logo is over and done with, it's been in the papers and has been picked up on the 'net. It's time to hype things up by revealing the link to Alton Towers and hopefully reveal a bit more about the ride soon.

Viral doesn't need to be as mysterious

It looks as though they did get permission to shine The Smiler on Big Ben and I'm guessing all the other buildings as well.

How do you know that?

Well they must have as I'm sure they could get into a lot of trouble without permission. It's an iconic landmark in the centre of London, not really something I'd expect anyone can project images on to! :p Same most likely goes for the other building, but in a lighter sense.

I supposed, but they tattooed sheep up and down the country without the farmers' permission and didn't get in trouble?

It wouldn't have been a tattoo - the faces were more than likely sprayed onto the fleeces of the sheep. And I have a feeling that the farmers did give permission for it to happen and they just said they knew nothing about it in order to make the articles sound more interesting.

EDIT: For the record, I've seen similar things before with sheep having numbers sprayed onto them, particularly during the lambing season, in order that ewes and lambs can be easily matched together. Having family members who own and have owned sheep in the past helps. ;)

stretchy, we can assume this is only the beginning to a much bigger and widespread campaign. Things like these posters and the sheep are just to get the logo in people's minds and to get people talking. Presumably once marketing seriously kicks off - we will see a lot, lot more from the park in terms of a nationwide reach.

It would be incredibly expensive to target every single city with poster campaigns - so doing it in the most populated city in Britain is good for a viral audience who might start sharing it on the internet to other parts of the country. Equally, Towers have used facebook and Twitter to spread their logo to their fans.

Whilst I agree that this is just one part of a bigger campaign, it's still wasted money and a bit daft in my mind and towers keep doing it. We had the nemesis eggs in London for NST, why London? We had for 13, the 13 girl wandering around London, why? The doctors car for sanctuary/sw7 was parked in London? Why? The answer is simple. The marketing team are based in London, and they don't understand that their main catchment area isn't from London.

I can't decide if it's legit or not. The guy says he works for a Manchester based ad agency, but why would he upload this to his personal Vimeo account?

That looks fake. The 'Resort' font looks like the different font that someone on here was making.

Edit: Was it Cotda that was making the font? I remember a test version being released.

I think the only reason you're seeing the "Resort" part differently is because we have never seen a capital "R" in the Alton Towers font before. The other letters are identical to those in the word "Alton Towers". There's no way this is fake.

:)

Re: [SW7] Marketing discussion

im not sure but it looks legit to me, i don't see why someone would go to all that trouble to make a fake advertisement for a ride

I'm 100% certain they would have had permission for that. With these types of things, that will gather nationwide attention, it's pretty clear that the farmers were asked for permission. The whole them not knowing story is just to add a little more mystery to the way in which Alton Towers intend to market SW7. It makes the whole smiley face that little more creepy.

Regarding the poster. I'd be lead to believe it's fake. As pointed out by BigAl, the 'Resort' looks like the mock up font that was being created by a member here - and on the poster it looks rather dis-jointed. Bit weird that someone would go into the trouble of printing these though and sticking them up. Unless it is official and Alton Towers just messed up the look of the word Resort. :p

Re: [SW7] Marketing discussion

Regarding the video, it was also posted on YouTube a few weeks back but has since been removed. It could be legit and if so is very interesting.

Appreciate that you might think it's just because marketing chiefs are based in London - but as others have said it's probably due to the amount of businesses and people based there. To grab headlines, you need to be all over the place that is most likely to make them. As it's the capital city - it makes sense to do stuff there.

Of course, the fact they're based in London admittedly does help :p

He included the letters from the logo in his font though:

Can't tell if it's legit, but that final part with the smile.... creepy!

Yeah that grin is majorly creepy... Note how the girl gestures 4 spirals with her hand, clue? probably not lol

Still I have to admit the Smiler logo on the poster looks great and fits with the seriously creepy nature of this whole project.

Re: [SW7] Marketing discussion

Fake or not I love that video.

Truly sinister...

Re: [SW7] Marketing discussion

Pretty sure that video is genuine. TBWA are one of the big marketing agency players in Manchester and it doesn't seem surprising that Alton would work with them on parts of the campaign.

It's quite common for folks to publish sample work and previews under their own account names in the design industry, especially as many do contract to agencies.
