Why do they keep referring to it as "the Derby based theme park?" It's not in Derby! In fact, the closest city is Stoke :/

Because the majority of Daily Mail research is performed by those with the reading age of a carrot? The whole article is riddled with mistakes to be honest - it looks like the work experience kid had a great day
Whilst I'm not a fan of the above brand of toilet paper, at least exposure in the mainstream media will help build some hype for the ride. Plus, whilst I'm no expert in the field, I'm assuming that someone from JLS is a lot cooler and illustrious a celebrity than Jack Osbourne or that bloke that married Jordan, so this may pull in a few more guests.
Interesting that the article cites the ride as "the first of its kind" rather than worlds first. Though a subtle difference, it lends itself towards a "first ride in the world to have x number of inversions" than an actual worlds first element.
Plus - this is the first media push for a while now. Hopefully the park have a solid opening date in their head and are now going to restart the advertising campaign.

I wonder if Alton has been reading the comments from us?

Gutted I wanted some! I can understand the risks identified above though!
Quick response from Towers though!

Towers management do check the forums, but I think it was probably more likely this was on one of their 'walkabouts'.
Management regularly 'walk' the park, to check guest experience, what's on offer etc. If this has passed by some management, then they find it, it's likely they removed them just in case.
Being a bored, ill 12 year old, I've came up with some marketing stunts AT could use
Need a smile?
Nominate a grumpy, sad or upset family or friend to enter the smile list! Are they sick, having problems, or just feeling down? Nominate them to win a family ticket to AT! 1 winner per week.
Spot Mr Smiley!
Remember Harry Hills knitted character thing? This will be just like this: in a tv programme mr smiley will be sitting in the background, and you have to tell AT which programme, and what time itbwas at to be in with the chance of winning some tickets!
Both of these imo will get people talking!

Just seen this on the Alton Towers FB:
'Thursday Trivia - just for fun... Can you name the world first roller coaster, at the Alton Towers Theme Park, from the track below?'
https://www.facebook.com/altontowersresort
Worlds first, not world beating?

I get the impression that there are different teams that just don't communicate with one another. For example, press releases have generally stuck with "worlds first example of..." or variants therein, whilst other outlets e.g. promotional posters have gone with world beating.
They're probably having a right laugh at how much we are reading in to these things. It could well be that they see them as interchangeable.

I'm starting to think that Towers are simply so used to using the phrase "world's first" with their new coasters, that they would use it if they opened a Big Apple.mrvardermier123 said:Just seen this on the Alton Towers FB:

I like that idea, probably due to the fact I'm call Mr grump by my wife and daughter.
and the fact i have just done a BBC quiz that tell me i am in the Precariat group in Britain’s new class system. that the the poorest and most deprived class group. Makes me a bit sad and could do with a smile

The ride seemed to originally start with worlds first. then when the Smiler logo came out, all text said worlds beating, then once the name was published, it all went back to worlds first again. That seems to be what they are using now in the all promotional things, press, etc.

Not sure if this is posted else where, but it appears Alton Towers have teamed up with Fudge Urban (A hair styling product I think) to promote the Smiler. I think its just BOGOF vouchers, but still could be worth looking out for, article below:
