Thorpe Park: General Discussion

LOL!

Well, it's publicity for HB Leisure and Merlin which they'll love :p

I'm not sure they'd be too happy about the nature of the publicity!

The two-for-one MAP offer on games just goes to show how hard they are.

Re: Thorpe Park

I've just seen via the Thorpe Park Official Facebook that they're really promoting and pushing the annual passes for £43 odd...

Its such a shame they're doing badly at the moment, but I can't help thinking that all those years of horrendous queues and awful guest satisfaction has come back to bite them!

The park is in a much better state than previous years, but clearly its not enough to convince people... Poor target audience marketing hasn't helped either I guess.

Re: Thorpe Park

^ Well they just lost another 4 people as of Merlins incompetence in maintaining things... Their annual pass booking system broke and we are now not going to buy a family annual pass for 4 people. They were rude and didn't help at all when we rung up their helpline. Today was probably 1 of my 2 themepark trips this year. Spoilt because of merlins incompetence.

Re: Thorpe Park

If you only go to a theme park twice a year, it's not really worth buying an annual pass.

Re: Thorpe Park

Odd. Despite their inability to spell my email address correctly (s and f are interchangeable, maybe it's an accent thing) Merlin customer services have always been really helpful.

The MAP system went down in the middle of my January Sale purchase so I called up and my purchase was fixed in under a minute.

Having made the mistake of looking at what Merlin staff are paid* I am surprised they are as cheerful and accommodating as they are (say compared to other big service providers who poorly pay their staff). I know I shouldn't have to be 'surprised' by good customer service but as a Brit I usually expect disappointment!

*before anyone kicks off at me, I'm looking at entry level roles.

But yeah, a MAP for two visits is pointless, unless you live in London and would be doing repeat visits to the attractions there. You'd be better off with Tesco Clubcard vouchers or BOGOF offers surely?

That's a good point. I went for a job at the Merlin customer service department, and had to turn it down due to the dire pay (it's a few penny's above minimum wage). You simply can't expect to get decent people in for that kind of money, so for some of them to be as good as they are is something Merlin are simply lucky to have.

Re: Thorpe Park

I have to admit there are some frankly remarkably brilliant staff across all Merlin attractions at customer facing level. This tends to make it rather more noticeable also when you encounter a bad one, let's also remember sometimes you just catch people on a bad day, it doesn't mean it's indicative of that persons normal service levels.

I've had some bad service at the parks, but it is overwhelmingly balanced out by the majority of quite brilliant ones. I know this was more about the phone side, but I do think this is a fair assessment of normal recruitment standards across the Merlin customer facing environments.

Re: Thorpe Park

Think it's also worth remembering that a staggeringly large proportion of back-of-house staff are also brilliant :)

Re: Thorpe Park

Staff across all departments (both the staff we see and those staff who 'make the magic' behind the scenes) are all pretty brilliant within the Merlin chain, remarkably good compared to other sectors in the UK when generally staff are not so highly praised for any service. May be there's just something about the theme park industry that results in such good staff (I'm just looking at UK staff here)? Of course you get one or two miserable or rude ones but on the whole Merlin parks are certainly in the positive side.

This is an excellent point James, I believe it is because it largely attracts enthusiasts due to the often unsociable manner in which you have to work, especially at Alton Towers, Ride Hosts in particular really graft on the whole all day long, but in general I think it brings in staff that are already passionate about the industry as a whole.

Nah we only go due to lack of money. Me and my dad had a MAP 2 years ago but we didnt have enough to renew it. We went over 20 times to thorpe park alone. :p

Re: Thorpe Park

It should have gone years ago, but somehow Thorpe and S&S manage to keep it limping along :p

Re: Thorpe Park

What exactly is wrong with it? Or is it better to say what isn't wrong with it? :p

Re: Thorpe Park

Thorpe have confirmed their late opening event: Summer Nights

All 7 coasters will be open from 7:30 - 10:30, with minimal queues thanks to limited ticket numbers.
Advance tickets are £18 or £16 for pass holders. Entry is free for Crash Pad guests.

It's an interesting idea, but as a pass holder I don't really fancy paying for a few extra hours, especially given night riding will be limited due to it being held in the middle of summer.

2 quid cheaper for pass holders? Hmmmm.

Is this a sign of even more up sell opportunities? Not impressed.
