Thorpe Park: General Discussion

I don't know whether this has been discussed already, but it looks like Thorpe Park's Trip Advisor score has dropped from 4 to 3.5 at some point in the not too distant past. Not sure exactly when.

I know that this might sound like a cheap excuse for a Merlin bash, but as a theme park enthusiast it is a shame that 3 of the 4 biggest theme parks in the UK (possibly 3 of the 5, depending on what Blackpool's visitor numbers are really like and whether you count them as a theme park), only get 3.5 stars. Flamingoland also gets 3.5 stars while Oakwood only gets 3.

When you compare the Trip Advisor scores for British theme parks to British zoos, steam railways, leading model villages and castles, then our theme parks don't seem to be leaving people very satisfied. It isn't catastrophic, and there are several parks that do very well on Trip Advisor and Alton Towers still gets reasonable scores despite the flack from enthusiasts this year. Paultons does particularly well, as do several smaller attractions such as Folly farm and Adventure Island. Nonetheless, it feels like the theme park industry is having a tough time at the moment. That might be partly down to certain accidents and the way that they've been reported in the media, but it can't help that quite a few of the people who are visiting British theme parks don't seem to be having a good time.

I guess it's partly to do with expectations. Thorpe/Towers have a higher reputation than Paultons for example and people expect high quality customer service and a premium product.

I think the overselling of fast track is the main issue which causes a knock on effect all over the park. People feel forced into buying FT and then as a result the expectations rise again... If there are lots of ride breakdowns and huge queues for food etc tensions soon start to rise.

Also the parking fee.

I'm surprised they've managed to get a rating as high as 3.5..

It says something when a park the size of Paultons is being rated significantly better than the Merlin owned parks.

It's not always about having the best rides, it's about how you treat your guests and value for money; both of which are questionable at Thorpe Park and CWOA.

Was it 2019 we were expecting a large investment ? Developments have seemed quiet at thorpe for a while now

Derren Brown's Colossal Waste of Money opened in 2016 so the next major investment should be in 2020. I suspect we will see a planning application at some point this year.

:)

What on earth type of attraction is this Love Island going to be? A fucking mass Tinder meet up?

2 days later from my post "Please don't" its reveal that this absurd nonsense is actually coming to the park.

They've officially lost their marbles.

As Love Island is watched by a big chunk of their demo I can understand they are trying to cash in on it. Agree all it is ITVs biggest show right now. I personally can't stand it but know others do and one small area changed into an IP for awhile ain't gonna hurt me.

What the f*** is love island?

I like what you did there ;) Thorpe will love it

People fall in love have sex on TV and gain “celebrity” status and then for 12 months do staged photo shoots and make as much money as they can. Then some of them decide they regret doing it.

The modern day Big Brother and completely suitable for Thorpe’s family audience, we all need a break from that year of horror

I think they realised that The Walking Dead is quite a drab and depressing theme to have all season. So they settled on another popular short term IP last minute that's less depressing for the summer season.
From what I gather, the show is basically a bunch of narcissistic strangers having their sex lives broadcast on national TV, getting emotional and bitching over the other stangers they met last week.
I believe the term celebrity is for anyone who has shown their face one time on a game show.

Pointless Celebrities?

I genuinely had to lookup what Love Island was earlier after I saw those headlines about one of the ex-contestants topping themselves, I hate reality shows so never watched it, but my neighbours did and they are all Thorpe core demographic.

Getting back OT, is the rumour right that Colossus is dead?

Love Island has always been planned to happen this year, as well as Walking Dead, it's not a last minute thing. They probably know they needed something less dark and a bit more summery for this part of the year, which is why they've got the split of scary stuff and non-scary stuff. Probably also explains why the scary stuff happening over summer (Zombie Hunt and Saw Alive being open) isn't directly related to Walking Dead.

Well Zombie Hunt is listed under the year of the Walking Dead activities and the evenings were originally branded as Summer Nights.

You miss my point. Zombie Hunt is indeed under The Year of The Walking Dead, but it's not Walking Dead related - there's no specific tie in with the show or AMC. It's just a generic zombie attraction (unless of course they're saving that as a big reveal, but that would make no sense). Also, Saw Alive is opening as part of the scary year of The Walking Dead, instead of a Walking Dead maze, which would make more sense.

Love Island Lates was indeed advertised as Summer Nights at first. But that's because they weren't planning on announcing it early. It makes much more sense to announce it when the show is airing and at its peak than in February. It's not like they panicked last month, rung up ITV and said can we use the Love Island name - contracts won't work that quick.

My point was Thorpe clearly wanted a summer event which was summer specific. They probably don't want it conflicting too much with Walking Dead as a brand, so the year of TWD stuff over summer can be more generic whilst Love Island happens.

Does anybody know if the £49 "pay for a day come back for a year" annual pass allows entry on the Friday/Sat love island lates 10pm closures, or whether they are like a standard MAP and exclude Friday/Sat/Sun entry in August?

TYIA

That's a shame.

Ouch LOL, funny thing is that bar The Swarm, thanks to its new wheels Colossus has been the smoothest and best operated ride for the better part of the year, mostly two train ops opposed to Inferno that can't even muster one most days and Stealth that between them, have more down time than an England footballer.

I think it’s £10 entry for standard pass entry to Lates, except in a Thursday when it’s free. PMAPs entry is free on all days for Lates.
