2014: Arthur in the Minimoys kingdom

Arthur Update

Spoilers Alert!

A few changes/improvements which I have noticed on more recent POV's of the ride:

- The house at the very start of the ride is now lit and has a projection of Arthur's grandmother inside
- The main screen at the start of the ride now has an ornate border so it looks less like a screen
- Lighting/smoke enhancements in the first scene
- Smoke and lightning enhancements by crawling monster/taxi tunnel before first outdoor bend
- Louder/more smoke effects in spider/Darkos corridor
- Better audio in Paradise alley to create more atmosphere
- Rat attack scene now darker/dark blue lights etc.
- Malthazard scene features new projection mapping effects

All this can be seen on the below POV:

Great to see them continuing with little improvements like this. They do make a difference! Really looking forward to getting back on Arthur next month.

:)

I forgot to mention the fact that whilst there is still some spots of downtime, it appears that it is also running on 7 trains mostly these days...

Makes a change from the 3, 4 or 5 we were generally experiencing in July!

Still seven trains on today, but a total of two rows out of action out of all the trains. Down from three out yesterday though!

The new Christian Geiger mural opposite EuroSat is now complete.

Well, how lovely. :p

Europa Park have posted the official Horror Nights promo video:

Very much looking forward to experiencing Horror Nights for the first time but also somewhat nervous!

:)

Lots of spoilers in that video, especially for the ice show in the second half - so if you're going and don't want to ruin surprises don't watch it :p.

After mainly doing Horror Nights and just shows at the weekend, a few thoughts from me:

Horror nights
  • The Horror Nights ice show is a little slow to start, but once it gets going it's one of the most ridiculously over the top things I've seen since the days of Mysteria's HUGE staging.
  • Nightmare has a really nice concept to it, was a little devoid of actors when we went round so short on scares, but really interesting all the same.
  • The Crypt Reborn was great as usual, could do with a couple more actors!
  • Fluch Des Werewolfs was the weakest of them all if I'm honest, although had the odd decent jump scare on the way around.
  • Labor is a really amazingly themed maze, nice to have something that's not in completely in darkness! I'd put this as a close second to Dead Inside 2.0.
  • Dead Inside is great as usual, different layout this year, and everyone seems to miss the entrance first thing and head to The Crypt and the others in the main "square" instead. We went round as a two it was so quiet!
  • There's a shedload of roaming actors as per usual, the guy wandering around with the spade is hilarious, he seemingly never stopped with his sinister laughing all night :p. Oh, and the usual health and safety fun with pyro ;).
  • The walkthroughs seem to get weaker and weaker every year. That said, I guess with the mazes getting stronger it's a trade off I'm willing to accept :).
Park in General
  • The new comedian/magician in Rhapsodia Italiano is hilarious. Not *quite* as funny as the ventriloquist guy but still great.
  • Spook Me! was great, and would thoroughly recommend seeing it. Not the sort of thing we normally see at EP, and it's got a VERY Disney feel to it. The show was extremely busy when we saw it on Sunday, with not a single empty seat in the theatre - so get there early! There's no English translation, so would recommend having a quick read of the synopsis over on the website using Google Translate. I got by from understanding bits of German, and the French 'scene setting' subtitles on the screens helped too. Some amazing music though, and the first time I've seen such a huge standing ovation at a theme park :p
  • As mentioned above, Arthur has had some touch ups and improvements, and seems to feel much more polished after its official opening. Many have cottoned onto single rider now though, so expect a long queue right up to the top of the stairs and then some. It's worth checking the main queue as often this can be a shorter wait now.
  • Surpr'ice at the Haunted Castle was 'ok' for me. I don't know if we were spoilt after Horror on Ice, but it didn't blow me away this year.
  • Bar Colosseo now has a very small selection of bar snacks (nachos and mini pizzas mainly)

One thing that's worth mentioning is how bad Silverlake Saloon has got in terms of service in the last year or so. They seem to be struggling massively to get orders taken, and to get drinks and food out. I assumed they were just having a bad day back in August when we visited, but on Sunday evening it took forever just to get menus, yet alone order the actual food. It's certainly something that needs to be looked at, as the place wasn't even full when we visited, yet the wait time was ridiculous.

Quite surprised to hear this. On my visit last month had completely the opposite experience. We were able to take our table 30 minutes before I had reserved it for, and was surprised how quickly the food arrived after we ordered. Was quite busy too. My only gripe would be we were sat upstairs in the corner so couldn't see the stage, and thus, the entertainment. :(

Have to say that I agree with Craig about the saloon.
I used to love the place, but everytime I went there this year I was disappointed.
It is know "normal" to wait more than 1 hour to get food, even if the place is not busy. And I've experienced it about 4 or 5 time this year.
I hope this will be sorted soon.

Must have been lucky then! It's been the last few times I've been now and the same thing every time. Same when a few others went a couple of days before too.

Speaking of that table - I bloody hate it! We got stuck there and whilst you can partially see the stage, it's soon blocked by people getting up to see what's going on. I would imagine now the extension is open in there, we'll see some sort of improvement in the coming year or so. Either they'll go all out completely redo it so that the stage can be seen by more people (in essence I'd guess they'd have to knock down and rebuild the place). Or, they'll go down the route of maybe adding some TV screens so others can see what's going on?

Who wants to know the Ciao Bambini lyrics? I don't, yet I somehow have the lyrics on my laptop.

Ciao, ciao Italia!
Ciao, ciao Germania!
Heut fahrn wir Hand in Hand,
ins große Wunderland der Phantasie!

Ciao, ciao Italia!
Ciao, ciao Germania!
Ein Reich voll Zaubermacht
Das Dich so glücklich macht
Vergisst du nie!

Bella Bimba, bello Bimbo
Ciao Bambini, kommt alle her!
Bella Bimba, bello Bimbo
Ciao Bambini, das ist nicht schwer!

Bella Bimba, bello Bimbo,
Ciao Bambini reicht euch die Hand,
denn wir fahren heut zusammen
in ein schönes Märchenland!

Ciao, ciao Italia!
Ciao, ciao Germania!
Heut fahrn wir Hand in Hand,
ins große Wunderland der Phantasie!

Ciao, ciao Italia!
Ciao, ciao Germania!
Ein Reich voll Zaubermacht
Das Dich so glücklich macht
Vergisst du nie!

The present throughput of Arthur has been billed as 1,100 people per hour by Europa-Park. This is when running 7 trains. It is hoped that the ride will be able to run 8 trains longer term to further increase capacity.

Obviously 1,100 is lower than most of the other rollercoasters in the park although it is higher than both Matterhorn Blitz and Pegasus. It is thought that the throughput is due to the difficulties that Mack have experienced with block sections and trying to manage more trains on the system easily. 1,100 is at least 2-300 more people per hour than were experiencing the ride when it opened in June.

I guess that with this being a family ride, it may not be so essential to have larger throughputs long term.

:)

The daft thing is, that's still a respectable throughput for most other parks. :p

I completely agree with you Craig, me and Sam went on the Monday night of our trip, we pre-booked our table, but still had to wait at the door for a good 10 minutes, no end of staff walked past, but none seemed interested in us. It was fairly busy, but not packed. We got given a table upstairs in the extension so couldn't see the stage at all, however as far as we could hear there was no entertainment on at all.

The first complaint came with our table, they just put us on the end of a long table sharing with another group of randomers. Not great when we had even pre-booked. They then took forever to bring us menus, and even longer to take our orders. We must have waited at least an hour for our food, and it wasn't just us, the people on the end of our table got their food one person at a time, and one person had finished their meal before the others had even arrived. From what I could tell, they complained as a manager came over to them.

We then finished and chatted for ages, and not one member of staff came to see if we needed more drinks, if anything was OK or if we wanted to pay. In the end we went downstairs to the bar and paid (the staff didn't seem that happy that we had bothered them at the bar). On our way out we then realised they hadn't even given us the free bread they normally give you!

Overall the food was lovely, but the service was utter rubbish.

Anyway bit late to the party but here are some thoughts from me from my latest trip to EP two weeks ago.
I agree pretty much with what Craig has said about Horror nights, it was my first trip and I was impressed with it all. All the mazes looked amazing in side and you wouldn't know they were in tents. Dead Inside was my favorite, and that provided some very good scares, I also really liked Labor, the sets looked really good. The ice show was also really good, and one of the best shows I have seen before, it was just so so crazy! Health & safety is certainly different in the UK.

As for the rest of the park, it was great as always, fairly quiet and no issues what so ever. I really liked Arthur, great ride for what it is and the ride system is so clever. They need to sort the conveyor our in the station though, it was so loud, you could hear it in the queue line, I thought it was a waterfall or some loud sound effect. My favorite scene has to be the Alley scene, it felt so big, loud and colorful with so much going on, the mirrors on the floor also help in that section. I have to say i'm not a big fan of the queue line, I think its just a bit dark and confined, with just background audio. I would prefer some music or more going on.
