This seems like one of those topics that could go round and round ad infinitum.

I see no problem with giving people a choice. If you want to partake then do, if you don't then don't, but I see no reason to remove that choice when it does no harm to anyone.

I don’t get the hate for showing the football at Alton Towers. If they closed off a massive area 3 months ahead like Scarefest prep to set it up I would agree but all they are doing is encouraging people to go to the park on a day it might otherwise be quiet. Those who want to watch it there can, those that don’t, don’t. I think it is a nice touch adding value to the admission price and how many times do Merlin do that recently?

A decision has been taken to show the football in The Courtyard this Sunday.

Looking forward to rides, a couple of pints and the England match!

In honesty, I think that is fair. Anyone who doesn't want to watch the football can avoid the courtyard pretty easily. Personally, I don't see the logic of paying to enter the park only to watch the football, but whatever, I'm happy to let people do that – it'll only mean shorter queues. Hopefully.

completely agree, perfect for those who want to get involved but discreet enough to not even be noticed by anyone who isn’t interested.

Was probably always the plan after all the last England match was out of hours

I don't think it's about paying to get into the park just to watch Football, it's more about avoiding guests not going on park because the football is on.

AstroDan is a prime example, a few pages ago he said he wasn't going on park so he could watch the game, now they are showing it he is going on park, therefore - increased gate figures. It's not rocket science :p

No, I agree that it does make sense to show the football. Personally, I don't see why some people would want to spend a few hours of their day watching it when they could be going on the rides. Like I say though, I don't really care, people can do what they want, especially if it means shorter queues.

Heaven forbid 'Shouting and chanting' should happen. I'm endlessly sorry for my previous ignorance. I hadn't considered that there might be shouting and chanting.

I think if I was enjoying a nice day out at Alton Towers and heard faint chanting and shouting in the distance, I'd leave the park instantly. Once when I was queuing for Nemesis I saw a teenager smile. Needless to say I got security to eject him from the park.

Thanks for this witty retort I feel it adds a lot to the debate.....

It makes no difference, Dan is a football fan and a theme park fan and his default if he can do both things at once will be to do so.

How many general guests do you think will research the situation that far. If you are willing to pay £60 quid before booze to watch football then you are a bloody fool.

I won’t be there but I’m sure the cheering and chanting will add so much more to the atmosphere of the area..... So long as football fans can watch it in every location regardless of everyone else then the world is a better place..........

As far as I am concerned every person for football shown at Towers who then moans about the commercialisation of Merlin and IP’s in their attractions, and the lack of good theming and immersion needs a long hard look in the mirror.

It's two hours, of one day, for the biggest national cultural thing of the year, that like 90% of people there will have at least a passing interest in.

Have no interest in the England team but fully behind this.

This is the biggest national cultural event of the year in the U.K.? I give up with this country!

Oh Dave! Calm down!

Remember this the next time there is a shit IP or event you don’t like in a theme park......

Well we can’t all like the same things can we... The world would be a very boring place after all!

By seriously, Europa show the World Cup? Is anybody moaning about that?! I think this is a great move!!

An IP goes on a hell of a lot longer than a four and a bit week football event held every four years though..

Even events wise, sure I personally might not like an event but then if it's something that a majority of people will have even a slight interest in then I'm all for it. You only have to look at Rob's photo from 2010 to prove this would be a success.

Like it or lump it, this is and always will be a huge event for England. The Courtyard is hardly a hive of activity at the moment anyway, so why not utilise it for something? It's a huge park, there's plenty of places to go if you didn't want to watch it.

Let's look at Thorpe last month when I was there. The Royal Wedding and FA Cup Final were both shown in the dome on their big screen. Did I watch any of it? Nope. I only knew it was on due to passing through to the toilet one time, and it had absolutely no effect on my day whatsoever.

"Been on the blower to the Hex Headhunters, meeting for a scrap behind the bogs by Duel post match. Its gonna be pwopa nawty. Alton Towers away.... LAV IT!"
