I've been thinking for a while now that those who work in care homes should be mandated to get the vaccine, so I am pleased to see that it looks like this could be happening.
Working in a care home is not just any old job. Your primary responsibility is to care for those who are too vulnerable to live on their own, and ensure their safety. Protecting residents from Covid now forms a part of this. As has already been said, everyone in a care home is classed as vulnerable; they are in a care home because they are not able to live alone due to age, frailty and many other medical conditions. Care homes should always be safe spaces for vulnerable people.
I have great admiration for those who work in care, as I do not think it is something I could do. Getting a Covid vaccine is paramount to keeping those vulnerable people that they care for safe. If a care home worker does not want to take that step then they should find a new job that is more suitable to their lifestyle choices.
My Nan is in a care home, she suffers from dementia. The care home is wonderful and we as a family can rest much easier knowing that she is being taken care of in such a brilliant way. I have no idea what the vaccine uptake is in her home but I would be disappointed if people were working there who had chosen not to take the vaccine.
I do not support mandatory vaccination of whole populations. But just like others have said you need the Hep B vaccine to work in some health care roles, and you need other vaccines to travel to particular places in the world. I don't see people kicking off over that.
If one person working in a care home who chose not to take the Covid vaccine ended up taking Covid in to the home where they worked, and caused an outbreak that led to numerous deaths, how would they feel? If they did not feel mortified then again, they are in the wrong job as clearly they don't care. I know how the families of those who lose someone would feel.
