Disneyland Resort, California: General Discussion

In a very interesting turn of events, Disney has announced that it will be retheming the two American Splash Mountain rides to The Princess & The Frog:

I wonder how much of this was to do with Splash Mountain’s links to Song of the South, and the recent petition to retheme it that occurred due to this? Funnily enough, The Princess & The Frog was even a suggested theme by the petition creator!

An anticipated timeline hasn’t currently been announced.

As much as I did like Splash Mountain’s theming, I look forward to seeing what Disney comes up with!
EDIT: TPW’s Facebook post seems to have disappeared, so I’ll add Disney’s official Twitter post instead:

I wonder if this will mean the end of critter country as the new theme is a perfect fit for New Orleans Square.

A good move in my opinion. I'll miss the catchy song and I am concerned as to how many of the Animatronics will be replaced by screens. However there's no reason this couldn't be an even better ride, especially if Doctor Facilier gets several scenes. It was his inclusion in the castle show at Disneyland Paris (2013) that got me interested in the film.

Sensible move all around. Ride hardware won't change but themeing updated to a more popular Disney film and also less controversial too.

I am gutted. Splash Mountain is one of my all time favourite Disney rides which has a bit of everything; thrills, fun, theming, likeable characters, a story that builds as the ride goes on and an outstanding catchy soundtrack. I am grateful that I got to ride Splash Mountain in both Florida and California.

I'm sure whatever Disney do with the re-theme will be brilliant, but I doubt that it will have quite the same soul and magic as Splash Mountain.

As for why they are doing it? Well we know that Disney are currently somewhat obsessed with ensuring that as many of their rides are related to more recent and popular films, as these rides make them much more money through merchandise sales. And now is probably a rather convenient time to announce these plans that they'll have had for a little while, as it makes them look good.

Disney has now ended the annual pass program for Disneyland Calfornia Mouseplanet - Disneyland Resort Ends Annual Passholder Program by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix

This could end up being a good thing, its estimated there was over a million passholders at Disneyland which caused significant crowding issues on some days. So a new revamped passholder program may be a good thing for the park, although it will short term annoy a lot of guests who (once the parks re-open due to Covid) will be priced out of being passholders.

This sounds like a bit of a similar situation to Merlin. Disney had already upped prices for annual passes quite a bit in recent years to try and reduce pass holders. The SoCal pass, despite the blackout dates was over a third of the price of the no-blackout top level pass and was heavily used by eligible residents.

Those residents were less likely to spend a full day on park or spend as much as day guests, so with lower crowd capacities in the short term they've decided this is the better option. Even post pandemic, there'll be a need to really drive revenue per guest, especially in Cali as they look extremely likely to be fully closed for well over a year. There's a lot of catching up for the parks division to be doing in the coming years!

I follow Adam the Woo on you tube and he had a special annual pass which allowed him into Disneyland and Disney world. So now his living in California and Celebration so he can still use his pass in Orlando but can still come back and visit his family and friends.

That was the premier passport that covered both parks on both coasts. It will also stop working from the end of March 2021 and if they want to keep visiting WDW (Florida) they will need to renew to a WDW annual pass instead. Until they announce the new passes for Disneyland WDW will be the only option.

Yes, Disney announced a while ago that Mickey and Minnies run away railway had been delayed until 2023.

the new avengers campus and Spider-Man ride will
Open this year, well as long as the park is eventually allowed to reopen!

the Marvel Avengers E-ticket planned for California adventure is also apparently on hold at the moment, so likely to be 2025 realistically if it goes ahead. Plans apparently have changed for the ride system, some talk a while ago was it would use the Flight of Passage ride system. I could also see the GOTG cosmic rewind ride system working for an avengers ride.

Yh i think that would work well though they'd probably make it a bit smaller than the one at Epcot! Avengers Campus replaced A Bugs Life area i believe and this Spider Man ride is replacing it's tough to be a bug so the area can bit Guardians of the galaxy: Mission Breakout!

Yes that's correct about the new land replacing the bugs life area, it was well under construction on my last visit at the end of 2019, was bit annoying due to the construction site after mission break its made it a dead end, and not able to pass through the old bugs life area to cars land anymore, well until the new area opens.

The E-Ticket is planned to take over the remaining part of the employee car park, which is located behind the area (radiator spring racers was built on the other part of this car park).

I still find it funny how Disney's California Adventure is a parking lot park

Sorry for the double post but i've noticed that Jungle Cruise is going to be updated because apparently it's racially insensitive! they're going to update the storyline to celebrate diversity more i believe!

I shared this link in the Magic Kingdom thread New Adventures to ‘Cast’ Off Soon Along World-Famous Jungle Cruise at Disneyland Park and Magic Kingdom Park | Disney Parks Blog (go.com)

In my opinion the Disneyland version has a few more issues compared to Magic Kingdom. Updating it to remove the African porters and the overall colonialism feel does seem like a good move overall.

Yesterland posted a nice comparison Yesterland: Goodbye, Old Jungle Cruise

I must say after reading the article and seeing Disneylands version of the people up the tree I can't believe it's stayed as it is for so long!
I like the idea of giving each character a story. Especially if they appear at different points through the ride.

In a rather surprising reveal, Disneyland have revealed that they will be building a third theme park, along with more resort expansions:

Really exciting stuff! I wonder what the 3rd park will be, or what it might entail? There’s not much info at present, but I think more might come within time. In terms of where it’s being built, it’s apparently utilising old parking space and land that is currently part of Downtown Disney.

On a side note, I believe that this is the first time a new theme park has been added to an existing Disney resort since Walt Disney Studios in 2002, which is interesting!
