You could buy a day ticket (or use a promotion to get cheap entry) and see how you get on. Assuming everything is good, you could then upgrade to the Merlin annual pass and get the entrance fee refunded. That way you're not buying a pass until you know you can get on the attractions.
Matt is right, 52" is a chest measurement I've seen on the ride entrance signs but everyone is different so you really need to use the test seats if possible. It's also worth asking the ride hosts before boarding as there are some larger seats on some of the attractions.
If there's no test seat you could ask a host if you're able to try at the exit. We used to let people on at the exit to see if everything is good, and if so they could rejoin the main queue in confidence. I don't know if the policy has changed or if they'd do this on busy days, but it's worth a shot.
