It had one of the higher 'WTF' factors, for want of a better phrase, out of the films I've seen, and while I'm sure you'll think of some deep and meaningful explanation for them, there were a LOT of scenes that seemed to exist for the soul purpose of... being weird or in some way unsettling - the shock value: content ratio wasn't ideal, and was probably even higher in the 70s when people were still offended by the likes of the Exorcist.
