On a bit of a 4-day weekend high, and have been in an oddly good mood all week, so time for some optimism
Work's going well - I'm once again making mincemeat of 'perfomance targets' and the potential mess created last week by someone complaining I was 'typing and clicking the mouse too loudly' has been cleared up - I think I've finally got a new desk next to a handful of people I quite like out of the deal, after we accidentally bonded by finishing each other's Simpsons quotes!
As most of you have probably gathered, I'm also an obsessive fan of progressive metal band Dream Theater, whose new album dropped this week after what seemed like a very long wait. For the first time ever, Amazon managed to get it to me on release day, accompanied by a concert ticket, meaning I've got the first thing to look forward to on my 2014 calendar
On top of that, I have lots more energy and motivation than usual when I'm in a good mood - so this weekend I'm making the trek to Scotland to finally add the M&Ds coasters and a few others to my count. First time I've ever driven north of Yorkshire; I know, I must be mad
And as if that wasn't enough? I never did get on with September, but October's usually fab as Scarefest's just around the corner. Must buy freedom pass if I don't end up wasting all my money this weekend.

Those of you who are interested in modern railways (and I know of at least a couple of people on here who are) may have heard of a magazine called RAIL, published every two weeks. It covers a range of subjects within the industry, including the major projects such as Crossrail, the Thameslink Programme, the GWML electrification, and a lot on HS2. As with a lot of magazines, they have a section where readers can send in letters on various subjects, and I have had a letter published in the current edition.
It's basically me moaning about the lack of ticket checks on First Great Western's trains, but hey - I've had something published in a national magazine! Admittedly, it's only got circulation figures of about 20,000, but I'm quite proud to be printed in a national magazine. Even if it is only a letter.

I don't actually want to understand why but, I'm intensely excited about re-watching The Wicker Man and The Wicker Man over the course of this weekend as research for an essay on film originals/remakes. This may be because they're both masterpieces in their own right as the original UTTERLY terrifies me and the remake is UTTERLY hilarious(ly bad).
Glad I'm holding my course's copy of the '73 classic ransom until further notice!

I'm not sure I understand why either; a few weeks ago, I watched the original for the first time out of curiosity, and perhaps it is a masterpiece, but I was left uncertain as to... why...
It had one of the higher 'WTF' factors, for want of a better phrase, out of the films I've seen, and while I'm sure you'll think of some deep and meaningful explanation for them, there were a LOT of scenes that seemed to exist for the soul purpose of... being weird or in some way unsettling - the shock value: content ratio wasn't ideal, and was probably even higher in the 70s when people were still offended by the likes of the Exorcist.

To be honest, I say 'I don't want to understand why' because I perfectly know the film fascinates me but for so many reasons I wouldn't be able to describe without putting it into an essay.
And I don't wish to get into a discussion explaining The Wicker Man, as everybody interprets the source differently, but I would like to point out that the film and The Exorcist were released in the same month in the same year respectively in their home countries!

I love The Wicker Man! Some of the stories behind the making and production are fascinating, and I would love to go to visit the area where it was filmed.
Anyway, feeling very happy as just booked a mini-break (v Bridget Jones!) to Disneyland Paris for just before Christmas. Never been before, so very excited
