[The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation

Personally I can see all the track being completed before start of the 2013 season (not half term) and so what is left will be electrics, landscaping, paving, theming and testing. With all that done I can see it opening in April - maybe around mid to late April.

I'm glad the ride opens in May!
It means they have time to finish the ride, polish it, and make it one of the best coasters in the UK, and possibly even the world!

I honestly can't wait.

As for the name, I like it; it's unique, thought-provoking, and sinister, which is just what Alton want it to be!

This will be one of the best coasters in the UK!

Well the name "The Smiler" being trademarked earlier has certainly grown on me, but with all the terrible weather and less construction updates this year and last, I think we could see it coming. As long as there isn't a big hoo-hah on March Opening Day with complaining guests, I think Towers' reputation will be fine if they just blame it on the conditions.

As long as this extra time is used to add extra detail and quality to The Smiler. (And we finally see that marketing budget being used to full swing; which we should of really gotten by now aside from a few posters).

I wonder if The Sanctuary will open with or before SW7, surely before as it isn't physically in X-Sector and can build up anticipation? I'm not sure if I can really last 7 months without Oblivion! Now I just smile away and wait for news. I feel like wanting to shout The Smiler now that it is finally confirmed.

We expect The Smiler, our fabulous new ride, to be fully open in May with previews to be confirmed in April.

Above is a quote from an email sent to MattH, which is an update to the news item...

So this kinda suggests we may get some soft openings "previews" confirmed late April...

Well I don't believe this delay is completely down to the weather, they would have allowed a good couple of weeks grace for severe weather and they also would be able to catch up a bit as well.
This has gone at snails pace from the start of construction and there is still no sign of either lift hill or ride trains yet.
This delay is down to hardware defiantly.

Edit: oh and for the record I think it's a stupid name.

Looking at the game pictures from the website, I spotted this image:

Will these convert banners make an appearance in the real ride on either side of the second lift, or would they just be for the game? It'd be a nice touch if they made it onto the finished, real ride.

Thank goodness enough people complained about 2 flat rides being closed that they reconsidered.

As I've said before I find it very unlikely this was the cause of the delay. Firstly because Alton would never have agreed to it if they knew it would put the ride so far behind. Secondly it doesn't explain why vertical construction didn't start until over a month into the closed season.

...or they rearranged the schedule for getting the ride done while pleasing the complainers but didn't account enough time for the wettest end to a season in years and one of the coldest winters.

Coldest winters? Are you sure, I've only dusted the coat off in the last week, it's been very mild. Wet I agree with but not cold and it hasn't been wet enough to slow construction down that much.
The builders working on the house across the road from me have only not done much last week, other than that they've been flat out.

It rained enough to supposedly wash concrete away earlier in construction and now it wasn't that wet? ;)

...or they didn't plan the ride well enough from the start and the bad weather has just made the situation much worse.

Sorry but the guilt trip isn't working. Those rides did not need to be closed all year round. There was significant access to the site from the road behind the ride and if they'ed needed bigger vehicles towards the end of the season I think most people would have been ok with them closing the rides then.

The idea of closing Submission and Enterprise had sod all to do with access to SW7, that was an excuse to save money.

It didn't wash concrete away either just covered it in mud and if that was a big problem they would have covered it up, that's what tarpaulins are for.

Is the barrel roll to the left of the ride car in the plans for the ride?

The game is touted as being a true 3D representation of the ride, so if it's not on the plans then that's confirmation that they've managed to squeeze more inversions into the outside section of track too.

Or less inversions. It's a small image but to me it looks as if there isn't half the track that there is on the plans. However the promo image on the website suggests otherwise.

True. Maybe it's still a work in progress and the game is yet to be finished.
