[The Smiler] Construction Updates / Ride Speculation Part 2 *SPOILER FREE*

On Wednesday I was really excited about this, but like a lot of you I've found the delay and the way Towers announced it to be an absolute buzz-killer. I'm now struggling to decide whether I still want to ride as soon as it opens or should leave it a few weeks. The park seems hellbent on rushing to get it open, so I can't help but worry that the first fortnight at least will be full of downtime, horrible throughput and unfinished stuff.
 
When will it open? Let's use an anagram of Alton Towers to describe it:

Yes, little old Pleasurewood are set to open Hobs Pit on time tomorrow. They had their press night tonight. (Not that anyone really cares)

Maybe the idea of the ride is so subtle, it is actually to make us Marmalise each other in frustration & we will slowly go mad.

That is a very clever theme if you ask me.

The fact this topic has become a meme-fest and almost featured a whole page of cow jokes just goes to show how badly this has gone for Alton Towers!

It's about time that towers released a full statement to explain their misjudgment. As the extensions to the delay continue, more and more people are getting put off. I can understand that the park are trying as hard as possible to get it open as soon as possible, because of the crowds expected at half term, but surely it's better for the park to just announce an opening date they can be sure that the ride will open on. It's time for the park to put their hands up and explain the problem.

This is all very miserable now. :'(
 
What is upsetting me about this project is that this is John Wardley's last rollercoaster. I don't want people to remember it as a failure but it looks like, at least in the enthusiast community, it will be.

After all the years of success, ending his career on this coaster would be horrible. Although maybe he'll feel compelled to create a new coaster because of how badly this one is getting off the ground...
 
He essentially ended his creative career over a decade ago. The Smiler will no way harm his reputation.

Anyway, The Smiler will not be remembered for this delay. Air, for example, also opened late, yet 99% of the people who ride Air will not know/care. And Air isn't even half way through its lifetime, probably.

No, The Smiler will come into its own eventually and people will love it - it's got decades ahead of it. There's just this awkward rough patch in the meantime.
 
To think in 20 years this 14 inverting ride will be remembered for being delayed and not for the whole 14 inversion thing sounds a bit silly to me.

In ten years time, when some kid rides it for the first time, he won't be thinking "Well that was great, I just wish they opened it on time way back in 2013."
 
Yeah, you're right. I know that after the Smiler actually opens, it will take its rightful place amongst the other coasters. It's just so very easy to be pessimistic at the moment which I'm really trying not to be.

Also, there was no way that I meant that people will remember it for being delayed in 20 years time. I'm not a complete idiot. I was talking more about if there is something wrong with the actual coaster which could have lasting effects which I can't imagine ever happening anyway.

On a side note, apparently, from the 20th May to the 20th June, it's "Smile Month". Got nothing to do with actually smiling, it's a dental health event. Probably just a coincidence but interesting that the Smiler will most probably open in this time.
 
There's word out there that they are going to have to lower one of the inversions slightly and a new track piece is being fabricated now.

This is going to be 2013's Jubilee Odyssey.

No way, you're kidding me?

Where did that come from - that could put it back weeks couldn't it? If we have learned one thing about this construction, bar one or two obvious ones ;), many of the rumours have turned out true.
 
I highly doubt that a piece will need to be re-fabricated and lowered. It was certainly running fast enough a few weeks ago. If a train did stall it's most likely a case of just tweaking the number of trim fins for the right speed.

(Although, anything is possible with this ride)
