Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

Why would they need to start testing out of the public's view? It can't be safety issues, and everyone knows what it'll look like from the game. It's opening in 2-3 weeks anyway so I hardly think testing in public will do anything but cause a buzz that will advertise the coaster around even more.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

They may do an initial pull through, or first run behind closed doors just in case there is any major issues.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

Is there anything to say that they haven't done an initial test in secret last night?

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

As John Wardley states in his book, it's extremely likely that the first time the train goes round the track will be behind closed doors - I'd say they either ran it last night or will do tonight.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

How do they do clearance testing??

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

Sometimes they put the boundaries on the trains, sometimes a wire mesh is just used. I think there's a picture of this somewhere in the topic.

Here's a typical one, although sometimes it's not on the train.

The vertical lift is apparently running and the brakes have retracted.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

Just got back from 3 days on park.

Friday the support was being welded, then yesterday the ride area was being tidied up, fences going up super quick, and the scaffold over the toilet block came down very quickly in the afternoon. We watched the brake fins going up and down at the station area and we heard the ride software had been tested and was working ok.

Today the car can be seen outside the station (wasn't visible yesterday,) and we heard a rumor that the ride completed it's first run yesterday evening after the park had closed 6pm ish. Looking at it again today I'd say more testing will commence later today/tonight.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

When they start testing, do they just send a train round a complete circuit first or do they test the blocks and stuff on the way round and then let it loose for a full circuit?

Also, inb4 "it looks a bit slow in that video" after the first testing video is released :p

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

I'd guess that they'd have to do tests using the block brakes with each of the trains as well as sending them round for full runs, Dar. Not sure which would come first, mind.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

The Swarm stopped on its block break for the first test run:

I'd guess this would do similar, especially as rather than block breaks they have lift hills so why not stop the car in-between to check the first half went well?

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

Does anybody know how many trains The Smiler has?

And if they are all on the track yet?

I believe that it has five trains. No idea how many are on the track yet though, at a guess I'd say two are.

:)

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

I thought there were 4?

I imagine they would send a train round in manual mode, and once a train stopped in a brake or lift section they would jog the train along. Isn't this done with new coasters to program the ride system software?

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

I've heard there'll be 5 trains, of which a maximum of 4 used at any one time. :)

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

Yes because that means four trains being used at any one time. The fifth will be used when one of the others is out of action. That's if there is indeed 5 trains - which would make sense if 4 can be used at the same time.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

A video of the vertical lift being tested today has appeared on Youtube. It's a shame they didn't film either from the front or the top part from the back (you can see the chain being fed down the return bit).

I thought there was 5 trains, with one of them being a breakdown swap out.
