Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2
OK whilst on park today, Park staff are freely telling visitors that The Smiler will be open 17th of May with previews on the 14th 15th and 16th.
Some construction photos from today.
Ooh whats this? a Tickler maybe
Someone actually working.. see I knew some of them did some work. This guy was hard at work the whole time.
Should that really be making smoke?
Some hoses.
The legs have these huge bolts being attached to the joints now.
The front of the station is now fully on. The bottom side is also done, only the top side to go.
Look that guy is working again, More importantly, just look how close the track is to the Marmalisers screens.
And some pretty spirally double helix bits, I wonder if this is homage to The Corkscrew.
And finally, a pick of the top end of the site where they were poring concrete most of the day.

Nice pictures.
Seeing up close pictures of the track definetely makes me think it should have been painted in black not grey.

Great pictures and nice to see that groundwork is almost finished. Interesting about the 'supposed' opening though, they'll definitely be pushing it but if they continue at the pace they have been over the last couple of days they may just make it.

The photo coverage of this ride has been fantastic these past few weeks. Thanks so much for all the pictures guys.
Regarding the turned around track blunder......we were always told this ride would have rotating track, and today we got it. I guess the secret element is just the builder looking at the plans the wrong way round.

Its coming along nicely and the Marmaliser is looking great! Even though Im not sure how the 'tickler' bits will look in a season or two.
Bit of an epic fail on that track piece though! Ah well, it seems to be joining the list of 'events' that have occurred during the smilers existence.

Without wishing to be confrontational, it is unprofessional. It's a mistake, yes, but it shouldn't ever have happened. Regardless of if its an issue or not, it still happened. Needless to say it made me chuckle!Wilsy said:It's been fixed so it's not an issue. I'm still not convinced it actually happened though.

I can't be the only one thinking that the Marmaliser looks like the laziestly executed piece of old tat I've ever seen which has had the nerve to describe itself as 'themeing'.
I didn't like the changes designed into the concept, but even that updated concept image looked a damn-sight better than this heap of scrap metal that lacks any style or character.
Sigh... I'll just keep lying to myself that it'll look better when they've finished.

No you're not I'm just glad someone said it before I did. Looks pretty average at the moment (and that's a compliment). That tickler thing - or what ever it's called - will be grean and mouldy after a few seasons and the rest is looking pretty un-intimidating. Ah well at least the coaster looks good.
Just on a side note, I'd like to see Merlin build a coaster without the black colour scheme.

You know it may end up looking crap but my-god are some here determined its going to be... I havnt made my mind up and the tickler isnt convincing me but I tend not to review something before its... You know... Built.
As for the track SHOCK HORROR a human made a mistake when operating a crane, it didn't even get bolted on, then they turned it round... It's hardly the mark of un-professionalism to make a small error when lifting a huge piece of metal.
Sorry probably a bit grr and i have no issue with suggesting you dont like the way things are developing but some seem to have cast their vote before the polls open, at least let the thing be complete before casting the complete wrath of the geek on it... if its bad I will join you

I also never saw the day i would agree with MeatPie.... but..... i do agree, the Marmalizer does look rather pants and tacky to be honest. Its gonna be one of those things that works for a few months then goes to pot and gets neglected afterwards.

Close up, high quality pictures of the marmaliser make it look really good, but from a distance it just appears to get lost in amongst the mass of track. What really lets it down though is the bottom part of the central column which appears devoid of any of the decent thematic detail that was shown the concept art.
A lot of the details are really enhancing its appearance though, like the round bolts added to the joints and the wires that have been added at the top of the legs. Equally, some of the added features are poor, "the flasher" for example looks like a piece of yellow plastic suspended by wires.
I have to say though, I am amazed at the sheer moronic decision to attach a yellow painted car wash brush to the top of one of legs. If this isn't proof of the sheer lack of creativity demonstrated by Merlin Studios, I don't know what is. There are a million other theming features that could have been used that would provide a better near miss and would actually provide some good theming at the same time, but what do we get....

Problem is people are comparing this...
to this
Obviously it will not look as shiny and as pretty as that car and that is an extreme example, but people seem very happy to jump and hate on something half built.
The only arms I'm not convinced by is the hypnotiser and tickler, judging by the concept. I'm not going to judge the real thing until it's done. I quite like machinary constructs out of girders and stuff!
So I like it so far...
