Thorpe Park: General Discussion

Thorpe Park Resort.

The name doesn't work in my eyes. Plus you can do almost everything in one day, which is more than enough in my eyes. In some ways Chessington is the same.

Still want to try the 'Crash Pad' just to see what it is like before making a judgement on the hotel. :)

Incidentally, this was the 90,000th post on this forum :p

Re: Thorpe Park

It really wouldn't surprise me if next season the whole park is relaunched, maybe even a new logo? And resort will be tagged on to the end, it happened with LegoLand got their hotel last year.

I know these are shipping containers, but I hope they try to hide the fact a bit, you could put some nice cladding on, and with it being a waterfront theme, you could have blue wood, or some kind of nice water effect added to the outside. Rather than just a pile of containers!

It must have been a success for Thorpe if they are doing it themselves and adding more containers as well as the cost of building it themselves, if not surely they would have just carried on as they were, or removed it.

Finally, someone being positive. On another note, does anyone know if Thorpe are getting any new attraction for next year, because surely something would have been submitted for planning?

Re: Thorpe Park

Thorpe have posted on Facebook/Twitter that they will be getting something new next year, but they haven't said what.

Storm Surge 2!!! ;)

I am actually very curious as to what this "new" thing will be, if anything, as I don't see where (apart from the island next to the swarm) anything especially new would go…...

Re: Thorpe Park

Depends how big it is really, there are plenty of areas around the park for small attractions, arena, 4D cinema, old railway, the old safari ride near Inferno. Then if you were removing rides you could have more room, eg carousel, monkey swinger, etc. Then there is also areas of land for minor rides like on the Swarm Island, near Saw Alive or near Stealth. Plenty of open areas around Thorpe.

Re: Thorpe Park

If it's a woody I will happily drive down for the first time since 2008

Umm Monkey Swinger is at Chessington, not Thorpe and SAW Alive is on the opposite side of the park to The Swarm Island

I guess, but judging on how thorpe aren't indicating what this new attraction is, it's probably going to be a re-theme :(

He didn't mean Saw Alive is near Swarm island, he meant the area by Saw Alive would be a good area to add something new alongside Swarm Island.

I'm very intrigued as to what Thorpe are going for with New for 2014. My guesses are on the 4D Cinema. Will they be using Vengeance? Who knows.

Re: Thorpe Park

I'm sure a Merlin park will get Vengeance, but I don't want it to be Thorpe.

Re: Thorpe Park

Im surprised vengeance hasn't already popped up at another merlin park, lord knows they hate waste.

Im intrigued with Thorpe at the moment, I think they have once again realised that family markets bring in more money and have stopped the awful 'big heads' and trashy marketing, if they go more towards families again I see this seasons attraction being a family one.

I forget who mentioned cladding the shipping container hotel, dear lord that needs to happen. I have no interest in staying in a metal shed. None.
If you disguise it a little and the price is right I might have a look, but otherwise Im afraid I am not touching it with a barge pole.

Re: Thorpe Park

The funny thing is (and I think Mike posted this a page or two back) that we inadvertently sleep in shipping containers already. Most new build Travelodges are built using them yet you would never know the difference!

It's a cheap building method and the rooms themselves from the promo web page look almost identical to Crash Pad but it will be interesting to see if they make the rooms bigger, clad the building and make it look more permanent. It can be done but it remains to be seen if they bother...

After all if the hotel has been pushed back 5-10 years, this is going to have to last a while!

Re: Thorpe Park

I would laugh if Thorpe parks new ride next year is something pedestrian like a round-a-bout or dodgems.

The only thing recently Thorpe get right are their coasters... To be fair that's not an horrific thing but I crave variety. I just don't think Merlin can deliver at the moment for any if their parks. It's a real shame as all the UK Merlin parks have real soul... Chessington has a real magic quality, Towers has a unique environment and could be world class and Thorpe has that skyline and some fantastic coasters.

The weight around all their ankles is Varneys idiotic Merlin machine!

Re: Thorpe Park

Whilst people still buy Merlin Annual Passes or go to the Merlin Parks, they will continue to invest the minimum required for maximum investment.

I did not buy a ticket or even a half price ticket for any Merlin attraction this year and wont do it for any UK attraction next year.

Unfortunately UK Merlin Parks bore me, which is a huge shame, as I am a big Alton Towers fan. Same with Chessington, I love the park, but havent been for 2 years as I dont want to see the park how it is.

So until people stop buying tickets, they will still continue with the minimum required. But hey, it doesnt effect me, as I just go to European Parks now instead. :)

Re: Thorpe Park

They are only painting the shipping containers blue with a blue door and a wave shaped canopy on top. So hopefully it will look a bit better. Will still be ugly though.

Re: Thorpe Park

Thought they had removed snoozeboxes, these are new ones "cladded" like shipping containers as the planning application said.

They can't be the same boxes anyway, they sleep different amount of people and some interconnect.

Re: Thorpe Park

I was all for the CrashPad when I first heard about the plans for a temporary hotel... I'm just wondering how long this cliché shipping container joke is going to run.

If they're decent sized rooms with some cladding, I'd be more inclined to give them a go, though I heard that CrashPad got decent reviews and attracted more than a teenage audience (families too!).

Whatever Thorpe install next year, they really have to try and capture their changed target audience. Families have been shunned from THE UK'S THRILL CAPITAL since 2003 when Eclipse and Quantum were installed, and Calgary Stampede got the boot.

I still feel that the last x amount of years of bad press re: queues, dire customer service & general poor park atmosphere are putting people off... it's a difficult skin to shed!

I hope for much longer, I'm doing a 12 days of Shipping Containers thing in the tavern!
