[The Smiler] Construction Updates / Ride Speculation Part 2 *SPOILER FREE*
Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2
The dumbbell-like items are to be fasted on to the joints, of the legs to look like pivot points, like it could move. The flasher leg has one installed. I think the whole marmaliser structure looks brilliant and really stands out. Can see it being quite iconic. Think it will look great when the dome etc go on. Shame it has to have a support in the middle - would look great just suspended on the legs, but I can see why. Would've been great if they could've made the central support like a needle or something. Wonder what the feet will look like...

The marmaliser is looking pretty good, especially now they are starting to add the theming details. However, I can't help but feel from certain angles it appears lost, failing to stand out amongst the mass of ride track. The central column is far from aesthetically pleasing too, I wish they had stuck with the plans on that. But that aside, this is probably going to be up there with the Nemesis station as one of the parks greatest single theming achievements.
Also, so much for "the station building will have to look exactly like the plans" malarkey I kept reading from people a few months back, it is obvious now that this is not the case. Mind, from the finished walls I have seen so far it doesn't look a great deal better than the original concepts.

They're only putting them up and cladding them at the minute. I imagine exterior theming work will be done once they're finished with all of the walls
Towers have just uploaded some beautiful fish-eyeishlooking pictures onto there Facebook page here - The Smiler - Construction

They mounted a camera onto the crane! Very inventive

It certainly does look impressive from that perspective, you can really get a scale of the development.
Anyone else think the track would have look better in jet black though, as oppose to this grey-ish colour?

Very nice photos from Towers! They give a really interesting perspective of the site. However they're out of date now, so how about a load of new photos from today?
As per usual, WARNING, VERY PICTURE HEAVY POST!!
We start with an overview from the top of the site. As you can see the second dive loop is now complete:
Concrete has now been poured for the area where the vertical lift will be:
Boxing up some rebar ready for more concrete pouring:
The marmaliser:
Another look at the dive loop:
Station walls coming along:
Marmaliser from a different angle:
The station from the bottom of the site:
It looks like a sign will be put on here:
Detailings on one of the marmaliser legs:
And here you can see wires that have been added to the main hub:
Close up of the Flasher:
Here you cans see where the theming elements of the Tickler will be attached to one of the legs:
More theming elements waiting to be added to one of the marmaliser legs:
Here you can see that the second dive loop is connected to the airtime hill leading into the batwing:
There was a lot of this happening today, Gerstlauer taking a good look at the completed second dive loop. They apparently had a real struggle getting the final piece to join with the other track which is concerning:
This footer confuses me, not sure what it's for:
Some nice shots showing the completed dive loop and how it interacts with the sea serpent roll:
The maintenance shed is coming along nicely:
There is no track in the maintenance shed, but here you can just about make out what is being used instead:
These could well be entrances from the queue into the building:
The marmaliser without the crane in the way:
The main wall of the station is now almost complete:
This part of the Flasher will provide a really good head chopper:
And from another angle:
The view from the Oblivion merge point:
Concrete pouring started to take place later on in the day:
A final overview:
And now we head over to the car parks where lots of interesting stuff can be found!
Lift track! Does lift track normally come with both magnetic and friction brakes attached though? Can't say I've seen it before:
I think this is probably the transfer track, although I could be wrong:
Lift hill chain:
The top of the vertical lift (I think):
Ahhh, there we go. I hope you like. There are rather a lot of photos there.
As usual, all photos taken from areas of the park fully accessible to the public. Please do not replicate my photos without permission. TowersStreet may use them if they wish.
And now a few points from me:
- Photos do not do the marmaliser justice at all. It looks so much better when you see it in person. It's very impressive and imposing.
- I hope the station will not be left as concrete, fingers crossed themed walls will be placed over the concrete walls.
- There is next to no rebar left in the car parks now, so groundwork is very nearly finished.
- So many people were commenting on The Smiler when they saw it, saying how awesome or crazy it looked and that they'll have to come back when it's open.

Thanks for the great pictures Rob. I'm so glad that groundwork completion is within our sights. Also regarding the mystery footer, I personally believe that it will house an additional theme object that stretches across the trench to provide a headchopper effect. My theory for this is due to there being another mystery footer on the opposite side of the sea serpent exit trench that simply cannot be used for a support. I have a feeling that we may see small, additional theme elements aside from the Marmaliser and the theme object on the X-Sector island. Maybe, it is theme object B from the plans that has just been moved further up site.

fantastic photos!
An idea for the breaks on the lift hill... If the ride is going to be synced for duelling. Perhaps they are there to control the speed of the lift hill a bit more accurately so they can time the trains reaching the top at the right time?

Quite possibly. I did overhear one staff member telling another that the coaster would duel. I hope this does mean synced, it would be really impressive.

If that track is for the vertical lift it's very different to Gerstlauer's normal design. All other Eurofighter's have bi-rail track attached with only a few joints to a slightly more bulky tower. They are also very minimalistic where as this has lots of different equipment on it.
A comparison:
Saw:
Rob's image:
The question is if this is just to cope with the heavier trains or for something more?
Edit: I like Fredward's theory

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2
That's quite a large footer just for a theming element though? The footers for the Marmaliser legs are tiny and that will surely be the biggest piece of theming.

There seem to be some previously unseen theming in this photo, yellow pipes/valves.
