[The Smiler] Construction Updates / Ride Speculation Part 2 *SPOILER FREE*
Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2
I am thinking the same thing, but it is an extra 'element' really.
Fredward said:why would they use dishes for things like that nowadays?
I'm sure they are just theming objects.

To quote myself a few pages back when i did a tongue in cheek joke,
If someone can get a close up photo of the LNB ( the box like thing at the end of the arm) on the dishes i should give a clue to what type they are.
I am wondering if they are a lighting element for the ride as i cant make out what type of cable that is, feeder (coaxial) or round electric so it look like a feeder cable.

this is a tongue in cheek joke about geek level

That makes sense, looks more electrical than coaxial to me from that picture. Could be a good point, I wonder if they do light up! My thoughts were they may move a bit, but there are no obvious motors.
Otherwise indeed, as Bigdave says!

Electrical cable doesn't coil like that, coaxail has a plastic core (along with other elements) - 100% coax that is.

Does seem very odd to leave the cable on like that, unless the level of detail that is going into themeing is higher than I have suspected.

I know aye, I have a big bag of it next to me (coax) attached to an old magmount ;D - clearly however, I have not got to grips with long distance wire ID and know feck all about most electrical cabling.
It doesn't make sense to be coax though unless MTV is returning ;D
EDIT:
I have rechecked that after what you said, and as daft as I think it may be, you're right! It does have that typical coax looped look!!
I mean, to make electrical cable appear like coaxial cable is beyond theme detail really, unless it is just attached and not doing anything to make it look more real as a centre piece.
That is odd. Be interesting to find out what that is for now...

Alternatively, there could be small lights at the ends of all three satellite dishes that will flash. Yes I know that's not realistic although it does make something static look more like it's doing something. Emphasising that they are receiving something - adding another layer to the mystery of the storyline as to who or what is really controlling it (The Marmaliser).
Just a thought.

It is a nice thought James, it will make it more lively but having taken on board what aircanman said, it's true, coaxial cable has a specific way that it coils due to how sturdy it is and the hard plastic inside tube. I've messed with the stuff years ago, anyone who did CB radio will recognise it (and potentially recoil in the memories of trying to fix bit aerials to the roof haha!)
I have to agree with them from that picture, it really appears more like coaxial cable, it's very uniform in appearance.
I am far more interested in this now than I really should be!

There could be a small LED cluster inside the LNB, pointing at the dish. With the right lense angle it would make the whole dish apear to light up. That would be quite cool, actually.
I highly doubt it though.

I know it sounded daft when I typed it, coax has a plastic core though which is why it coils like that, electronic cable would have some kinks in it unless it was super high quality which I doubt would be used.

There was a time when knowing who built a roller coaster just by the shape of the track was the peak of geek on these forums.... A page on cables has just taken us to another level :/

It might have just come with the dishes so they thought "bugger it, add it to the tower".

Yeah I have some here ;D - with a couple of PL259s still attached to each end lol! Never ended well fitting those ;D
This or German MTV which remains my personal favourite completely nonsensical addition.
I can't believe I am discussing wiring, I don't think Aircanman can either (easy for you to say).
The hand dryers especially are of critical importance!

Are we talking glasses or waste receptacles?
